Despite the injury-riddled season the big club has had this year, there is a silver lining for 2009. It's hard to imagine the farm system having a better season than it did this year. Many prospects took a huge step forward. Despite what media members might write, the mets farm is looking up at the end of 2009.The bad news for Fernando Martinez was it turned out to be another injury-riddled season for him. The good news for the outfielder is that before this happened he dismantled AAA pitching in 2009. A 20 year old with an OPS of .877 in AAA is almost unheard of (even if it was in a little below 200 at bats). His brief stay at the majors was largely unsuccessful but not surprising. He does have more work to do, and staying healthy is priority number one going into 2010. Ike Davis took as big a leap forward as one could take in a single season. After a sluggish start to his pro career in 2008, Ike was one of the best hitters in both leagues he played at in 2009. As of now, his o...

Carlos Beltran Returns Tonight

Carlos Beltran returns to the Mets starting lineup tonight for the first time in more than two months, reports Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post. While his return will not help the Mets avoid missing the playoffs for the third straight year, Beltran’s return should bring some legitimacy to the Mets lineup. Finally some upbeat news [...]

Sheffield Out For The Season

On Saturday, Jerry Manuel said that Gary Sheffield (back spasms) likely will not play again this season. It’s kind of strange when you consider that the Mets had an opportunity to get something in return for Sheffield on August 20th when he was claimed on waivers by the San Francisco Giants. The Giants were in the [...]

Carlos Beltran on the Cusp of Returning

It appears as if Carlos Beltran is on the precipice of returning to the Mets lineup. According to Jerry Manuel, Beltran could be in the lineup Tuesday vs. Florida “if he’s still somewhat symptom free” a by then. Beltran played a full nine innings in center field last night for the Brooklyn Cyclones, his third [...]

Yet Another Reason the Mets Are a Complete Joke

You know things are going bad when the best that can be said about you is that, in spite of everything, you're still not as bad as the Knicks. But the news in this morning's Post about a creaky Citi Field is really just the cherry on top of an altogether miserable season.Courtesy of Post scribe James Fanelli, we now know that "shiny" Citi Field has a nickname at...

Mets batting leaders Gary Sheffield, Carlos Delgado doubtful to return this season

Any Met fans still holding their breath to see Gary Sheffield or Carlos Delgado back in the middle of the lineup should stop. Jerry Manuel is doubtful either injured slugger will play again this season.

Murphy's bat, Pelfrey's arm lead Mets over Cubs

Daniel Murphy homered, tripled and drove in four runs to back Mike Pelfrey's eight efficient innings in the New York Mets' 4-2 victory over the Cubs on Sunday. Pelfrey allowed five hits in his longest outing this year and Murphy finished a double shy of the cycle. The Mets took two of three from Chicago in a series between preseason NL favorites who have struggled all season.

The Metseidon Adventure

The Mets' 4-2 victory over the Cubs was marred by yet another incident of another incident involving another water leak that turned into a tidal wave in the locker room. John Maine, who made his return to the clubhouse recently from injury, never had a chance. Maine, unfortunately, drowned as a result of the latest mishap. He's day to day. The damage to the state of the art...

Maine may be back by Sunday

John Maine hasn't pitched since June 6 after being put on the disabled list retroactive to the next day with what the Mets termed "weakness" in his right shoulder. But he could be back by Sunday, starting the second game of a doubleheader in Philad...

Players That Intrigue Me for 2010

I was thinking of some players on the Mets current roster that intrigue me for 2010. My criteria for these players are that they are inexpensive, yet could play a role with the big league ballclub. Josh Thole/Omir Santos – Thole is the most obvious name that comes to mind. It’s great that he is 4-9 [...]

September Should Be More Fun Than August

If there is a bright side to the remaining games in the Mets’ schedule, it is that they aren’t likely to be less entertaining than the August matchups. Between the return of David Wright, the scheduled comebacks of Carlos Beltran and John Maine, and the presence of Josh Thole, Tobi Stoner and Nick Evans, there [...]

New Rule Change Proposed for Major League Baseball

If the first relief pitcher in place of a starter blows a game for a starting pitcher and ends up getting the win, the credited victory should not go to the relief pitcher who blew the lead. It happened again Friday night in the Mets-Cubs game. A starting pitcher leaves after seven innings with the lead, and then the bullpen comes in a blows the lead. In this case it was Bobby Parnell...
