The Wes Helms Era is over in Philadelphia. With the recent signing of Rudy Seanez, the Phillies had to get rid of one player from their roster to make room, and Helms was the victim. Helms was designated for assignment, meaning the team has 10 days to trade or release him. Helms is owed just over 2 million for the rest of the season, which the Phillies will have to pay if they end up releasing him.
Since the signing of third baseman Pedro Feliz, Helms' days have been numbered. Helms has been a man without a position, and would have been relegated to pinch hitting duty if he remained with the team. Helms could end up being picked up by the Dodgers or Giants, two teams that have been rumored to have interest, but neither of them would trade for Helms when they can just wait for him to be released.

The Author Who Cursed Tom Gordon
If I were the Phillies, I would call up Stephen King and ask him to write about some other ballplayer. Tom Gordon has been more or less "cursed" since King wrote the book, "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" (1999). Maybe if he writes about someone else, the bad luck that has been brought on Gordon will be released, sort of like an exorcist of sorts. Or, maybe Gordon...
Phils Sign Rudy Seanez
Help?
According to the LA Times, relief pitcher Rudy Seanez has been signed by the Phillies and will be activated in time for Wednesday's game. It's time to see if this guy can help the bullpen, after all I've been calling for him to be signed the past 3 seasons. The 39 year old has pitched in the majors for 16 seasons with a handful of teams posting a 4.15 era, 1.41...
Relief is on the way: Phillies Sign Veteran Pitcher Rudy Seanez
After yesterday's implosion, the Phillies are getting proactive in fixing their bullpen. The Phillies have signed veteran right-handed reliever Rudy Seanez. Seanez, 39, is not the savior for the bullpen, but rather a solid addition who strikes out batters at a high rate. Seanez spent last season with the Dodgers, who released him after he struggled this spring with a 7.71 ERA.
Deja Vu?
Last year the bullpen nearly cost the Phillies a shot at the playoffs with the likes of Tom Gordon, Ryan Madson, Jose "Joe Table" Mesa, and Antonio "6-Finger Ant" Alfonseca. This season may turn out to be just as bad, as Pat Gillick put together the same crap of Gordon and Madson, but mixed in Tim Lahey, Clay Condrey, and Chad Durbin this time...Deja Vu?

Phillie bats fall silent in 1-0 loss
In their season opener, the Phillies pitching came up small. In today's 1-0 loss to the Washington Nationals, their pitching was excellent, but their bats were nowhere to be found. The Phillies managed just one hit off of Nationals starting pitcher Tim Redding and relievers Luis Ayala and Jon Rauch. Redding didn't have overpowering stuff, as evidenced by his 2 strikeouts...
More Errors than Hits
The Phillies are playing so incredibly bad right now that I post this in the middle of their game (currently losing 6-1 to the gNats through 3.5 innings). The Phils have committed more errors (5) than hits collected (3) during the last 2 games. That's piss-poor baseball right there, and that's why Charlie Manuel and the Phillies suck in April. Sad thing though, I have...
Phillies pull off comeback for first win of the season
It took extra innings, but the Phillies, sporting their new uniforms, battled back from a 5-run, 1st inning deficit to notch their first win of the 2008 season, an 8-7 victory over the Nationals. The Phillies won in the 10th inning when Jayson Werth stepped up with the bases loaded and was walked on four straight pitches, allowing Jimmy Rollins to stroll home for the winning run...
And the Mets were Worried about Pedro's Arm!
The NY Mets are sure glad they got Johan Santana today as Pedro Martinez told manager Willie Randolph that he might have heard a "pop" in his hammy on that last pitch he threw. Barring a miracle, it looks as if Mr. Martinez might be going back on the DL. The question is, will it be the 15 day variety or longer? Good thing they didn't trade Jorge Sosa as some reports...
Phillies Walk Off with a Win
Before the bottom of the sixth inning in the third game of the season, the Phillies were pathetically averaging as many errors as runs: 7.
The Phillies' strengths last season — offense and defense — seemed to be their 2008 Achilles' Heel.
Phillies Fans Rejoice: Pedro Injures Hamstring
We have our first casualty in the war between the Mets and the Phillies. In the 4th inning of yesterday's loss to the Marlins, Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez threw a pitch, felt a pop, and limped off the field. The initial reports are that Martinez has a strained hamstring, but he is going back to New York today for an MRI. It is almost a certainty that Pedro is headed for a DL...
That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles
On a cold, windy night in Philadelphia, last year's best offense was stymied by Washington Nationals starter Tim Redding. If the game was a series of coin flips, the Phillies called heads every time and it always landed tails. Every ball they hit hard was right at a defender, and one of the many balls hitters did not hit well accounted for the only run of the game — a Ryan...
One is the Loneliest Number
One is the loneliest number that I've ever seen. 1 is the number of hits the Phils had tonight with Joe Nobody pitching. Season now 2 games old, and 2 losses mounting. Pathetic, terrible, appalling, hopeless, worthless, futile, horrible, horrendous, wasted, awful, dreadful, abysmal, ugly...just plain bad baseball (with the exception of Hamels' outing). Tune in tomorrow at...
