The unthinkable might have finally happened. Charlie Manuel, who has been loyal to his players almost to a fault, may have finally had enough of Brad Lidge blowing games for the Phillies. After blowing 10 (!!) saves this season and nearly blowing another one on Tuesday night, Manuel appears to have turned the closer role over to Ryan Madson. At least for now.It all started on Tuesday night when, after Lidge let two runners on and got one out, Manuel put Madson in the game and he threw 6 consecutive strikes to clean up Lidge's mess and earn the save. While that was the first sign that Manuel seemed to be turning on Lidge, the real news comes out of Wednesday night's game when Lidge was bypassed completely. With the Phillies clinging to a one run lead, Madson entered the game in the 9th inning for the save opportunity and, while he was a bit shaky, got the job done. So, Ryan Madson now appears to be the Phillies closer. Will it last the rest of the season? I doubt it. ...

Thursday thread: Phillies prevail despite themselves

After last night's peach of a game, Charlie Manuel made no official ruling on his closer, which means he's come to his senses and is going with feel. When it comes to comparisons, there's no question Brad Lidge can't hit the broad side of barn and Ryan Madson is the one throwing strikes, and blistering ones at that. I said before that Madson deserved a second shot...

Phils use late HRs, Madson as closer to get win

The Phillies used late homers and Ryan Madson as closer to beat the Nats on Wednesday.

Manuel Did What He Had To Do

Admitting that it was tough to do, Charlie Manuel took a walk to the mound last night in Washington and pulled Brad Lidge in favor of Ryan Madson. The move worked, but Manuel is still going to face tough choices.

Madson gets the call, finishes off Nationals

The Washington Nationals would rather not play any role in determining the identity of the Philadelphia Phillies' closer. If the Nationals had their way, they would lead every matchup with their division counterparts and never allow Charlie Manuel the opportunity to choose from Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson and Brett Myers as his man on the mound for the ninth inning. Alas, the Nationals...

Solo Shots Lift Phils

Brad Lidge was on the verge of blowing his eleventh save.  Almost.  When the lead-off runner reaches base, trouble is ahead.  This time Charlie Manuel lost his patience and pulled Lidge.  But would Ryan Madson escape the bases-loaded, one out jam with Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn due up? Before the ninth inning drama, Pedro Martinez pitched another gem.  [...]

Getting Closer To A Closer?

It's too early to say the Brett Myers or Ryan Madson era has begun but it's late to be saying Brad Lidge can no longer be counted on to close games. The Phillies beat Washington last night on the strength of Pedro Martinez' good outing and solo home runs from Raul Ibanez (2), Jayson Werth and Chase Utley. The homers gave the Phils four players (including Ryan Howard)...

Closing Lights Are Out for Lidge

The Philadelphia Phillies have removed Brad Lidge from his closing duties. At the moment the move is temporary but at the same time a very troubling sign for the pitcher. Remember this has happened to him before when he was with the Houston Astros. “I don’t see us using him in the seventh or [...]

Charlie Manuel: Brad Lidge still Philadelphia Phillies closer despite struggles

Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel says Brad Lidge is still the closer for the defending World Series champions.

The Philadelphia Report: Phillies Need To Address Closer Dilema Now!

Brad Lidge continues to struggle on the mound for the Phillies, and that doesn’t make for a good situation as the Phillies make their inevitable entrance into the postseason this year. But to be honest this is par for the course for Lidge. Historically—the past four years to be exact—Lidge has been a big up-and-down guy, which is probably one of several reasons...

Recap: Washington vs. Philadelphia

Raul Ibanez hit two solo home runs, including the go-ahead shot in the seventh inning, and Philadelphia overcame another shaky ninth inning from Brad Lidge to beat Washington, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game set.
