Tom Gorzelanny (5-2, 5.24/1.16) vs. Jeff Weaver (5-4, 3.71/1.44)
According to Jim Hendry, "There has to be a sense of urgency" for the Chicago Cubs. They enter play tonight six games back of the St. Louis Cardinals in the Central Division. While Alfonso Soriano's comments led most to think he was conceding the division to the Cardinals and will shoot for the Wild Card instead, either road to the post season will be very difficult for Lou Piniella's crew at this point.
The Cubs will have to play consistent ball for the remainder of the year, something they have not done this season, if they want to reach their goal of the post season ... as well as receive a lot of help. Rich Harden made a good first step on Wednesday night but the Cubs will face a far superior team for the...

Jeff Weaver (5-4, 3.71) vs. Tom Gorzelanny (5-2, 5.24).
COMMENTS: The Dodgers are coming off a particularly painful series against the Cardinals, where we lost games Monday and Wednesday by the slightest of edges, but it was just enough to make one question the vertebrae of the team down the stretch run. And now we get the Cubs, the team we summarily dispatched in last year's NLDS...
The Hendry conundrum
What do Alfonso Soriano, Kosuke Fukudome, and Milton Bradley all have in common? Scratch that -- the more appropriate question is what don't they have in common.
All three have big contracts, given to them by a general manager who was likely bidding against himself.
All three are putting up "worst case scenario" numbers -- statistics you won't likely see...
Los Angeles Dodgers News & Notes: Bills Shines, Weaver to Start Thursday
Bills Back on the Bump
Chad Billingsley threw six innings last night in a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, returning for the first time since straining his left hamstring on Aug. 7 against the Atlanta Braves.
"I really didn't know what to expect," Billingsley said. "I had command of my fastball, and I threw that a lot…I mixed in some offspeed, and I was really pleased with...

Lou Piniella Returning To The Cubs In 2010
Via Bleed Cubbie Blue, Lou Piniella says he will return to the Cubs in 2010. Piniella left stints in Seattle and Tampa Bay with time remaining on his contract, and had refused questions about his return earlier in the year. Is it a good thing?
Now. I was not a Lou fan before he was hired. He did an outstanding job in 2007 and 2008, but has seemed somnolent and distracted this year...
Cubs 2-7 Dodgers: Another Brick In the Wall
The Cubs scored a couple early runs, but that was all undone when Angel Guzman gave up a 6th inning grand slam to Russell Martin. The offense, and Alfonso Soriano in particular, continues to struggle. The Cards won, so the Cubs find themselves 7 games back with 49 left to play.
It’s all over but the getting on with our lives.

Feeling a little Randy tonight?
Randy Wolf (7-6, 3.43) vs. Randy Wells (9-5, 3.01).
COMMENTS: Randy W. vs. Randy W.! Chicago's Randy W. is a rookie ground-ball pitcher, and his numbers certainly seem impressive. The Dodgers' Randy W. was a monster in his last start, and if Jeff Weaver is the pitching staff's unsung hero, then Wolf is becoming the rotation's...
Fixing it with cash
While we wait for AJ's recap ...
As we noted yesterday, Jim Hendry has a history of failing to draft and develop players, causing him to throw ridiculous piles of money at free agents to fix his team's gaping, glaring holes. While it would be nice to think that the Cubs will be able to trade away Milton "Problem Child" Bradley, or Alfonso Soriano for that matter...
Rotation is filled with uncertainty
Hiroki Kuroda is expected to go on the disabled list and Clayton Kershaw is sick. Jeff Weaver will pitch Wednesday or Thursday.
On a day when Manager Joe Torre conceded that Hiroki Kuroda probably would go on the disabled list in the near future, Clayton Kershaw walked into the Dodgers' clubhouse with flu-like symptoms.
Solution Down on the Farm: Cubs Could Rebuild From Within
After recently reading a excellent article by Tab Bamford, it really got me thinking about the future of the Cubs, and whether spending money on free agents was really the way to go. The salary figures are staggering, and unfortunately some of them would be hard to eradicate early, even if we wanted to.
I am looking at Alfonso Soriano's contract while saying this.
However, with...
