TEAMS: San Diego Padres
You know the prospects for the upcoming season are...interesting...when I decide to start the blog with a quote from Annie. On paper, the Padres don't have a lot of hope for this season. The only thing most of the fans think about the 99 game loss season of 2008 is that they wish it had been 103 so the Friars could draft SDSU phenom Stephen Strasburg.Instead, we have the Three Musketeers and not much else. Really, not many outside the NL West can name a San Diego player after Jake Peavy, Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young. And most of them can only name Young because of the height of his frame rather than the expectations for his performance. For those of us who remain Friar Faithful despite the lowered expectations, the challenge will be finding the positives in a season expected to set the table for future meals rather than sustain us in the present. And all the Fortieth Anniversary gear in the store won't bring a smile half as quickly as a breakthrough season from Chase Headley or Nick Hundley.

Padres Drop Opener To Dodgers
The San Diego Padres dropped an opening day decision to the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 and about all I can think to say about it is that the food was good and that Jake looked like he was pressing in the first inning.Look, we all know that expectations for the Friars are pretty low this year. (Those who claim they are at an all-time low have conveniently forgotten the 1970's.)But...
Inside the Numbers: MLB Opening Day Player Payroll for '09
Heading into the 2009 season, the total amount spent on Opening Day player payroll in Major League Baseball declined 1.56 percent from last season marking the first decline in team spending since 2004 when the league saw clubs spend 2.69 percent less on player payroll than 2003. Total league Opening Day player payroll for this year is $2,655,395,194 compared to $2,697,392,597 last...
Season Previews: San Diego Padres
Now that it's Spring, it's time for one of our favorite things in all the world: Season Previews. Two years ago, they began as a serious analysis and ended up as half-assed haiku. We're just gonna go with what we know. Moving right along with our preview of the National League West, here they are: the San Diego Padres.
San Diego Padres 2009 Preview
On April 6, 2009 the San Diego Padres will kick off their 40th season in Major League Baseball. In contrast, FOX’s popular animated sitcom “The Simpsons” is in the midst of its 20th season on television.
They’ve had a more successful run than the Padres, too.
In those four decades, San Diego has yet to obtain a [...]
110 Losses, Here We Come!
Padres opening days are nothing if not classy. When we think Padres baseball, we think first-class all the way.The day began as Padres openers always do -- with the dignified tradition of a tuxedoed Ted Leitner doing a poor man's version of Michael Buffer. After the 20-minute pregame ceremony -- which seemed more like 20 hours -- the impression it left with us was: Leitner is...
The Comings and Goings in Cleveland
Indians Place Dellucci on DL; Recall Crowe from Columbus
With just one week until they open up against the Rangers in Texas, the Cleveland Indians tweaked their opening day roster once again to make sure that it is just right. Their basic moves are that they placed outfielder David Dellucci on the 15-day disabled list where he will be until the middle of April. To fill his...
Greene To Possibly Be Offered Extension
"The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the San Diego Padres are likely to offer short-stop Khalil Greene a multi-year deal this off season. "He's one of our better players, and we'd like him to be here for some time", GM Kevin Towers said. Khalil will reach arbitration for the second-time i...
BREAKING NEWS: NY Yankees looking to acquire top free agents in the offseason!
Skimming through Yankee-related articles I found an article a writer who appears to be contending for the title of Captain Obvious over at SportsIllustrated.com . Jon Heyman went on to report that the team is looking to acquire CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, Derek Lowe, and/or Jake Peavy to bolster their pitching rotation. First thing that came to mind ? 'REALLY?!'

How Close was Peavy to Wearing Pinstripes?
Posted by Lionel on April 4, 2009.Jake Peavy was almost a Cub. We all heard the rumors all winter long. But just how close was it? Well, according to Baseball Tonight, this close (imagine I in holding my thumb and forefinger about about 3 millimeters apart). Buster Olney reported that Kevin Towers told him that the Cubs and Peavy's agent were discussing deferred payments to make...
Braves Lock Up Lowe, Kawakami
A while back, I reported that the Atlanta Braves were making a big effort to fill some holes in their pitching rotation. Well, it looks like they have been doing work. The Braves and Japanese pitcher Kenshin Kawakami agreed to a 3-year deal. While in Japan, Kawakami won 112 games in 11 seasons. Last year, the 33-year old pitched for the Chunichi Dragons. The 5?10? pitcher is the first...
The NL West is Easy
It's the Dodgers division. Never mind the fact that Chad Billingsley is hurt. The offense is just too good. I mean really. If the only player that you don't know in the starting line-up as you go off the cuff is the second baseman. (Blake DeWitt?) You have enough to get the NL West. Why? Because outside of the outside chance that the Diamondbacks have to win if Max Scherzer...
San Diego Padres Top Ten 2008 Minor League Prospects (via ArmchairGM)
Dirtlocker points for: Heath Bell, Jim Edmonds, Marcus Giles, Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Scott Linebrink There's two sides of the coin when it comes to trading Minor League Prospects. Everyone, I think, is well aware of what happens when a team trades most of its prospects in order to get a ...
