TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds
First blast
It only took Scott Van Slyke, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, nine plate appearances to hit his first career home run with a blast over the left field wall. Scott, the son of former Pittsburgh Pirates 3 time All-Star Andy Van Slyke, received the green light on a 3-0 pitch from Marc Rzepczynski. With two outs and two on in the bottom of the seventh inning. He brought his team from behind with the three run shot, to put Los Angeles up 6-5 against the St. Louis Cardinals. Scott is from the St. Louis area, and how fitting it was to come in as a pinch hitter and hit the game winning home run against his childhood team. Closer, Kenly Jansen, came in the ninth inning and finished off the Cardinals with three straight outs for his fifth save of the year. Scott Van Slyke is batting .333 with one home run and six RBI in nine games.
Javy Guerra gets the win with a record of (2-3). The Dodgers finished the weekend with a three game sweep of the Cardinals, and improved their record to 28-13. Marc Rzepczynski is now (0-2) on the year. The Cardinals have now lost four straight, with a record of 22-19, leading the NL Central by a half game over the Cincinnati Reds.
