The Phillies ended the 2011 season by winning the NL East crown and then were up set in the NLDS by the Cards. On one hand I have to give the Phillies credit since this championship run started they have been very aggressive in the market acquiring players through trade and free agency. I could only have wished the Mets would have acted in the same manor back in 2006, instead the Mets limited themselves to just filling holes and never getting that player to put them over the top. On the other hand each time I see the Phillies sign one of these aggressive deals, I keep saying it's going to end up blowing up in their face. They're giving up too many years and too much money, to aging players but so far it's seems to all have worked out perfectly for them. This might be the first year they're starting to feel the financial crunch of being among the top payrolls in the league, despite great attendance and playoff money they have not replaced the players leaving with equa...

Top Moment #4: Win 102
Charlie Manuel is a big reason the Phillies won 102 gamesIn the last couple of years, the last day of the season was somewhat meaningless. By that time, the Phillies already clinched the division and September callups saw much of the action.2011 was a tad different. The division was already clinched, but the Phillies were playing for something else: history. And as it turned out...
Player Profile #110: Jonathan Papelbon | RP | PHI
If you lived in New England you would think Jonathan Papelbon sucked, but it’s quite the opposite as he’s been one of the best closers over the last six years. Well, Boston fans finally got their wish and Papelbon is now pitching in the NL East. First, he should benefit from the switch just based on not having to face the Yankees offense 18 times per year. Papelbon is...
Papelbon an Upgrade in the Phillies Pen
The Phillies have made some sweeping changes this offseason, with one of the more notable moves being the addition of former Red Sox closer (and owner of one of the most intense faces in baseball) Jonathan Papelbon. The addition of Papelbon cluttered the closer position to the point where the Phillies closer from last year, Ryan Madson, signed a one year, $8.5 million deal with...
Ibanez the top DH target?
From Kevin Kernan:The Yankees have interest in lefty hitting Raul Ibanez, according to sources. Ibanez’s average dropped to .245 last season with the Phillies, but he hit 20 home runs and drove in 84 runs. Ibanez, who will turn 40 in June, has drawn interest from a number of clubs.
Ibanez recently had a productive workout with hitting guru Rudy Jaramillo and believes he has...
Phillies Sign Juan Pierre to Minor League Deal
Juan Pierre. (MLB)The Phillies have inked speedy outfielder Juan Pierre to a minor-league contract.Last season, Pierre, 34, was still a serviceable player with the Chicago White Sox, although we know he is completely one-dimensional. He will give you slap hits and speed and not much else. Over 158 games, Pierre hit .279 in 711 plate appearances, however, his steals fell from 68 in...
Hunter Pence have come to terms with the Phils, signing a one-year $10.4 million dollars deal.
The Phils have just announced that they have signed the last of their arbitration-eligible players, as Hunter Pence have agreed to a one-year deal worth $10.4 million dollars.

Philadelphia Phillies Agree to Minor League Deal With Outfielder Juan Pierre
The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a minor league deal with outfielder Juan Pierre, the team announced Friday.

Roy Oswalt Looking To Sign with Cardinals
Roy Oswalt is one of the last big name free agents left on the market in the MLB, and it seems like the St. Louis Cardinals are in pursuit of him...and it looks they're in the lead as well. Oswalt has said he wants to remain in the National League and going to the defending champions looks like a good destination. It's reported that he could sign with the Cards soon, at least...
Oswalt is going to St. Louis, or is he?
There have been reports that Cardinals were favored by Roy Oswalt and they are the front-runners in the race. The Cardinals were also reported to have made an identical $5 million offer to Oswalt as the Red Sox did earlier in the week.
WEEI:
According to Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio, the Cardinals appear to have the inside edge on signing free agent pitcher Roy...

Cardinals in running for Oswalt
The Cardinals' search for pitching depth has returned them to
free agent righthander Roy Oswalt despite the club's persistent
denials that it is actively pursuing its longtime nemesis.
Oswalt still mulling offers from Red Sox, others
Free agent Roy Oswalt will not be choosing a new team Friday, a major league source said, even as reports surfaced that the veteran hurler is leaning toward signing with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Spring Training Primer
You can’t tell the players without a scorecard. Well in the 21st century that might be altered from “scorecard” to “Iphone or Mobile Device App” (there’s an app for that) but you get the idea. Modern MLB Free Agency is an annual frenzied flurry of activity and even the most ardent fans may have difficulty keeping up with the fluid roster of their favorite team.
Gone are...
