For once, something went according to the script. Cole Hamels was a dominant ace, Hunter Pence got a big hit with runners in scoring position and Shane Victorino lashed extra base hits. And for the first time in nearly a month, the Phillies won a series. Albeit against the team they last won a series against in the Colorado Rockies.

It was nice to see the team play well in those last two games, even if it did take a 5 out save from Jonathan Papelbon after another bullpen implosion on Saturday.

It’s hard as Phillies fans now to not get excited when the team plays well. It happens so rarely now that it makes you think that maybe they’ve finally turned some mystifying corner. I’m just not convinced of it.

The fact is that the Phillies beat a team they should have. The Rockies are one of the few teams in baseball that are worse than the Phillies record wise. If the Phillies are going to hold on to any hope of making a second half run, they’re going to have to do more than just beat up the Rockies.

The next stop will be in Los Angeles. The Dodgers have slipped some, but still pack some punch and trail their division leaders by 1.5 games. The Dodgers have suffered without Andre Ethier and MVP Matt Kemp. Ethier is back, and Kemp will be soon to follow. If the Phillies can pull out a series victory against the Dodgers, we may have something here.

In the meantime, there is still quite a bit of work to be done. The Phillies will need to continue to play according to script. They’ll need their starters to pitch well and go deep in games. They’ll need their bullpen to be at least half decent, and they’ll need Papelbon to continue to be very good.

This is not the start of an amazing comeback, but it is a step in the right direction. Whether the Phillies can keep it up is the real question.

Tomorrow the Phillies will get Roy Halladay back. For the first time in 2012, they will have all of their stars. The Phillies will now need to play like it.
