Right-hander Aaron Cook has been released by the Philadelphia Phillies.
The 34-year-old agreed in January to a minor league contract and was 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in three starts and three relief appearances during spring training. He would have been owed a $100,000 retention bonus under baseball's labor contract if he was not released Tuesday or assured in writing of a spot on the opening-day roster or major league disabled list.
''Ultimately we decided this was the best thing for all involved,'' Philadelphia assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said.
All-Stars Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay head a starting rotation for the Phillies that includes Kyle Kendrick and John Lannan.
Cook is 76-79 with a 4.60 ERA in 11 big league seasons with Colorado and Boston, including 4-11 with a 5.65 ERA in 18 games starts with Boston in 2012.
