In yesterday’s 6-3 win over the Nationals, Mike Pelfrey allowed three runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings and failed to qualify for the win. He threw 106 pitches, 64 of which were strikes. Today in Newsday, David Lennon wrote: “After beginning this season as the Mets’ de facto ace, Pelfrey has turned into the second coming of John Maine , another one-trick pony whose failure to put away hitters rendered him an ineffective starter. Pelfrey also employs a curveball, slider and splitter, but those pitches are not good enough to miss bats on a consistent basis.” That pretty much sums things up for Mike. He drives me nuts, and his outing yesterday in particular was just painful to watch. What’s frustrating is, like I’ve said so many times, the stuff is there and he shows glimpses, but outings like yesterday seem to be the norm for him rather than the aberration at this point.
