Welcome to the first of five of our All-Star Break assessments. Today we tackle: The Bench.
Mike Fontenot – The seven year Major League veteran was a free agent after being cut from the Giants at the conclusion of the Cactus League but has been a valuable bench piece, splitting time at 2nd and 3rd and posting a .325/.364/.386 triple-slash in 24 games since being called up on May 13. His .388 BABIP and career triple-slash .267/.334/.405 suggests this pace is an abnormality and I won’t disagree. However, I will say that this value off the bench is being wasted in a down year for the Phils; I can’t help but imagine what even his normal production could have done to help the team last year, being able to spell Placido Polanco in the playoffs. Grade: A
Pete Orr – The player Fontenot essentially replaced was having a fine bench year in his own right (.286/.302/.429) but g...

The latest edition of PN TV looks at the Cole Hamels trade possibilities and the likelihood he stays in Philadelphia. Some good quotes from a one-on-one with CSNPhilly that we discuss.
Also, is there even a market for Shane Victorino? His down year has to be scaring off trade suitors.
We also give grades for the bullpen, offense, and starting pitching as we’ve hit the midway point...
First baseman Chris Duffy has been excellent this season for the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws. Through 41 games in the South Atlantic League, the 24-year-old has tallied a .373 batting average with 5 HR and 32 RBI. Additionally, the lefty hitting slugger has reached base via hit or walk in all but one of his 41 games for the BlueClaws this season.
The 26th round draft pick out...
Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino appears to be on his way out of Philadelphia, according to a report by Jon Heyman this afternoon. Dylan Hernandez is disagreeing, according to his latest tweet. Hernandez says the Dodgers are still looking for a corner infielder, starting pitching, and a left-handed reliever. Heyman adds that people familiar with the situation have suggested...

If the story of the year for the Phillies has been their sudden and rapid fall from grace in the NL East, then the second big story has been what to do with Cole Hamels.
So far in the saga of Cole, we have heard that he will leave the Phillies to go to the Dodgers once he hits free agency. We have heard...
Vance Worley fills out the bottom of the rotation, making starts like yesterday’s for the Philadelphia Phillies. Are the young guns in San Francisco getting the job done? The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my recent coverage linked below.

Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies is the cream of the NL East. What starter on the Braves also goes deep into games frequently? The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my daily coverage.

It's not uncommon that you hear of other players speaking about their teammates after being traded. What is uncommon is hearing other players speaking about their teammates before being traded.
According to Todd Zolecki, a few players who spoke to reporters yesterday mentioned the recent rumors of their teammate Cole Hamels being potentially...
Hunter Pence hilariously ran over Phillies third base coach Juan Samuel while trying to score from second on a double by Juan Pierre during Saturday’s game against the Braves. Pence didn’t loop out before rounding the bag like players are taught, and he was so wide of the base line that he ended up running into Samuel and bowling the coach over.
Samuel stood with his hat knocked...
Carlos Ruiz was selected to be the one to handle the catching duties for knuckleballer R.A. Dickey during the 2012 All-Star game. But to do so, Dickey brought along his own catchers' mitt for Ruiz to catch (pitctured above).
Knuckleballs are highly unpredicable. So much so that Tony LaRussa did not think that Buster Posey of the Giants could handle it. But Chooch could...
Philadelphia Phillies Manger Charlie Manuel The first half is over. Thankfully. The Phillies have had their worst start since 1997 and nothing this season has really gone to plan. The questions of why have been asked now for 3 months. They’re only intensifying now, after a 9-25 performance in the last 34 games. Who is [...]
Scott Franzke is in his sixth year as the lead radio play by play voice of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Scott Hairston is an 11 year MLB veteran, now with the New York Mets after spending time with Arizona, San Diego, and Oakland. He's batting .249 this year with 12 HR and 34 RBIs.
Why does this matter to you?
Well, you see, 5 of those 12 HRs from Hairston have...
