With the score tied at 1-1, New York Mets manager Terry Collins opted to pinch hit for starter R.A. Dickey — who had thrown just 88 pitches — to begin the top of the eighth inning.  Collins called upon Andres Torres and while it took eight pitches, the end result for Torres’ at-bat was a strike out.

Direct Terry Collins quote: “When Andres strikes out, you say to yourself, ‘Well, hell, R.A. could have done that.’ ” Gotta like the candor. about 10 hours ago via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @AdamRubinESPN Adam Rubin

The 34-year-old centerfielder has now collected just one hit in his last 34 at-bats, watching his season average drop to a dismal .187 in the process:

Torres realizes he is not getting the job done, telling Adam Rubin of ESPN New York he feels bad he hasn’t performed:

To be honest, I haven’t done what I’m supposed to do. This game you have to make your job. You have to get it done. And I feel bad that I haven’t performed like I wanted. But I’m here. I just have to find a way to get on base and get hits and things like that.”

Although Andres was mildly effective upon his return for the DL (13-for-40 with 8 RS) he has been brutal over the last two weeks.  And, according to Andrew Keh of the New York Times, Torres said the constant changes he made to his swing were probably not helping him.

Sometimes I change my swing every at-bat, my mechanics, and that’s something I need to fight and be more consistent in it and try to be more focused. Sometimes, in this game, if you do a lot of changing, that doesn’t help. I’ve always been like that, but I have to fight to stick with one thing.”

What ever the case is for Torres, he needs to figure it out.  With the play of Kirk Nieuwenhuis and the return of Jason Bay on the horizon, the lineup will have no use for a guy struggling to hit his weight (this goes for you too Ike Davis).
