The Los Angeles Angels have placed third baseman Alberto
Callaspo on the 15-day disabled list due to right calf tightness, the team has announced.
Callaspo suffered the injury during Thursday night’s contest
against the Oakland Athletics. Initially, the Angels only expected him to miss
a few days before returning, but he’ll instead require at least two weeks on
the shelf. To replace Callaspo on the roster, Los Angeles has called up reliever
Michael Kohn from Triple-A.
Injuries have depleted the left side of the Angels’ infield,
as shortstop Erick Aybar also recently hit the DL due to a bruised left heel.
At this point, LA is using Brendan Harris as their primary shortstop, while
Luis Jimenez will man the hot corner. While there isn’t a definite return
timeframe for Callaspo, the Angels are hoping that he can rejoin the team when
eligible later this month.
Over nine games this season, Callaspo has hit .273/.351/.394
with a double and home run over 38 plate appearances. The 30-year-old owns a
career batting line of .275/.336/.384.
