The Los Angeles Dodgers appear capable of anything. Even a trade of right fielder Andre Ethier is not out of the question. The Dodgers are shopping Ethier, major-league sources say -- and their intent might be to clear a spot for a free agent such as first baseman/outfielder Nick Swisher or center fielder Michael Bourn. However, one official with knowledge of the Dodgers' thinking says that the talks about Ethier originated from inquiries by two American League clubs, and that the Dodgers are not actively pursuing a deal. The official adds that the renewed interest in Ethier stems from the shrinking pool of available hitters on both the free-agent and trade markets The Dodgers have "zero intention" of trading Ethier, the official said, but will listen to offers. The discussions, to this point, have failed to progress. Whatever the Dodgers' intentions, it seems doubtful that any team would take Ethier's new contract in its entirety. He is a career .238 hitter against left-handed pitching. But, in the words of one source who has been in contact with the Dodgers, "I wouldn't put anything past them. They've got so much money, they don't care." Translation: The Dodgers could pay a significant portion of Ethier's contract to facilitate a trade. The Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners are among the teams that could be in the market for outfielders. One possibility would be to move Ethier for another outfielder -- say, Seattle's Franklin Gutierrez. But Bourn, in particular, would be an intriguing free-agent option. The Dodgers lack a leadoff hitter, and the addition of Bourn also would enable them to move Matt Kemp from center to right field. Kemp is coming off shoulder surgery. Left fielder Carl Crawford is coming off Tommy John surgery. And Ethier underwent surgery on his right knee in Sept. 2011. Ethier lacks a no-trade clause in his new contract. The Dodgers, under new club president Stan Kasten, do not include such provisions in their deals.

Report: Dodgers shopping Andre Ethier, which makes some sense

There have been whispers the Dodgers have been shopping Andre Ethier basically the entire winter. Today, those whispers got even louder. From Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News (surprisingly enough): "Source: Dodgers shopping Andre Ethier. If they deal him, they could be in the mix for Nick Swisher." Mike Petriello said he also heard the team is shopping...

Dodgers send John Ely to Astros for Rob Rasmussen, and it's a good deal

Not the trade some were expecting, but a trade nonetheless. The Dodgers sent John Ely, the perpetrator of "Elymania" a few years ago to Houston for left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen. With the Dodgers signing Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu, while also shopping starters Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang, Ely was about 15th on the starting pitcher depth chart. It's...

Making Moves: Gwynn NRI, Schumaker Trade, Van Slyke DFA, Greinke/A-Gon Contracts

Dylan Hernandez reports the Dodgers have acquired Skip Schumaker from the Cardinals, sending minor-league shortstop Jake Lemmerman the other way. Chad has more on the deal here. My reaction: meh. —– The Dodgers have designated Scott Van Slyke for assignment in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Schumaker. Down On The Farm: Winter Leagues – Dominguez, Sulbaran, Garcia, Puig, Miller

Dodgers Already Shopping Ethier?

The New York Daily News’ Mark Feinsand just tweeted that the Dodgers might be looking to move Andre Ethier, with a possible view to getting involved in the Nick Swisher sweepstakes. That’s the same Andre Ethier they signed to a five-year $85 million extension in June. The obvious caveat here is that this could well be part of the general winter chicanery that teams go through...

Dodgers Sign Greinke

By SBRForum.com The Los Angeles Dodgers shocked the world this past week when they announced that they had signed star pitcher Zack Greinke to a long term, lucrative contract. He has been placed on the team as a way to help them develop strength in their pitching core so that they can get closer to the World Series in 2013. If all goes well, adding Greinke to the team will make them...

Dodgers lack a quality bench, which is something that needs to be addressed

The Dodgers have a pretty thin bench. When guys like Skip Schumaker and Jerry Hairston are the best the team has to offer, something needs to be done. For all the corner outfielder/first basemen the Dodgers had in recent years, that's where they're lacking right now. Despite acquiring Schumaker, the Dodgers might still need a legitimate center fielder. Tony Gwynn might...

Don Mattingly: Dodgers massive payroll will create unrealistic expectations

All of a sudden, the Los Angeles Dodgers are the New York Yankees. After the massive trade they pulled off with the Boston Red Sox last season and an offseason that has included signing Zack Greinke to a six-year, $147 million deal, L.A. is expected to have the highest payroll in MLB history in 2013. As baseball fans know, with a massive payroll comes massive expectations. Dodgers...

Report: Dodgers Shopping Andre Ethier, Which Could Lead to Run at Nick Swisher

The Los Angeles Dodgers aren’t done their offseason overhaul just yet apparently. The Dodgers, who have been giving their franchise a very pricey facelift in the last four or five months, are still exploring options.
