The Houston Astros will be without starting pitcher Alex White for the 2013 season. White, a 24-year-old right hander, will have Tommy John surgery.
White had decreased velocity this spring and was originally diagnosed with a strained pitching elbow.
The Astros acquired White from the Rockies in exchange for Wilton Lopez. Last season White made 23 appearances with the Rockies finishing with a 5.51 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP.
Travis Blackey who was acquired from Oakland in a trade on Thursday has been promoted to the big league roster. Edgar Gonzalez was designated for assignment in order to clear a spot on the 40 man roster for Blackley.
The Astros also announced today that Erik Bedard will make his first start of the season on Tuesday. Bud Norris and Lucas Harrell will each move up a day.

Everyone knows the Astros are not really trying to win this year so I try to cut them some slack, but this made Carlos Marmol look like Nolan Ryan. At least Marmol got some people out. Cedeno has only pitched 30 some innings in the majors and he’s going to wish he could start over after tonight. Cedeno allowed 6...
Yu Darvish’s almost perfect game still wouldn’t have topped this fairly noticeable mustache from this Astros fan.
After getting plenty of production to win their AL debut, the Houston Astros have struggled to generate any kind of offense.
The Oakland Athletics' bats have awaken after a quiet start.
