The Houston Astros are skipping Kyle Weiland for at least one turn in the rotation because of shoulder soreness, and they should know soon if he'll be out longer. Weiland left the team after Wednesday's 7-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers to go back to Houston to see team physicians on the Astros off day. Wandy Rodriguez will make the start in Weiland's place on Friday in Cincinnati, and he'll be followed by Lucas Harrell and Bud Norris, who will be on schedule like Rodriguez because of the off day. Weiland would be slotted back in his No. 5 spot Tuesday against the Mets if he's deemed healthy. Weiland gave up three runs on six hits over a career-high seven innings and 105 pitches Saturday in a loss to the Dodgers. He said the soreness dated back further than that, though. "It's been building up a little bit since late spring training," Weiland said. "Nothing too serious; it's stuff that I've felt before, and I want to stop i...

Jason Castro gets blown up, where is the uproar?

On Tuesday night former Stanford and Castro Valley HS star Jason Castro of the Astros was run over at home plate by Mat Gamel of the Brewers, in a collision that was similar to the Posey/Cousins collision.  Castro held onto the ball, Gamel was out and that was it, save for the headache Castro no doubt received (hopefully not a concussion).  There was some analysis of the play on...

Anywhere in the batting order, Altuve produces

The only one who doesn't find the Jose Altuve lineup odyssey all that interesting, it seems, is Jose Altuve. The Houston Astros second baseman has hit second, he's hit eighth, he made a quick jaunt up to the No. 6 spot in one unusual lineup, and he was back to second for his 4-for-5 effort Wednesday. Through all the inconsistency there, Altuve has been one of the most...

Astros plunk leadoff man after contentious collision in previous game

The incident left Houston Astros catcherJason Castro with only a little bit of neck soreness, but the topic of Monday's collision at home plate was hardly dead come Tuesday afternoon. Castro was the subject of talk on national sports networks, and the big hit played out over and over again on highlight shows. The play came to the forefront again Tuesday night when Bud Norris...

Altuve, Martinez lead Astros past Brewers

Martinez had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Houston Astros over the Brewers 7-5 Wednesday and stop an 11-game losing streak against Milwaukee. Chris Snyder put the Astros ahead for good at 5-4 with an RBI single in the seventh off Jose Veras (2-1) after Brian Bogusevic doubled and stole third. Wilton Lopez...

Starting pitcher Kyle Weiland has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder bursitis, the Houston Astros announced Friday. An MRI showed no structural damage to Weiland's shoulder, general manager Jeff Luhnow said. Weiland hasn't started since Sunday, though he did play as a pinch-runner Thursday. The Astros have called up left-handed reliever Fernando...

Astros looking for clutch hits

Although the Houston Astros had outscored their opposition by nine runs after Monday's loss to the Brewers, the club sits at just 6-11 on the young season. Manager Brad Mills and his club are looking for a few more clutch hits.

MLB Should Ban Home Plate Collisions … And Takeout Slides

As I watched Houston Astros catcher Jason Castro get absolutely lit up in a home plate collision with Mat Gamel of the Milwaukee Brewers, I wondered to myself why this aspect of baseball was even necessary. I’m obviously not the first person to suggest this, and I’ve read all the criticism of writers who have

Astros-Reds Preview

The Houston Astros don't mind having to move up Wandy Rodriguez in the rotation, especially given how well he's pitched of late. Rodriguez - nor the Astros - have been as good when visiting the Cincinnati Reds in recent seasons, though. Houston looks to avoid a fifth loss in the last six games at Great American Ball Park when it begins a three-game series with Cincinnati...
