Ron Darling should know better.

When he led off the broadcast by saying "oh well with the Pirates and Padres coming up on the schedule, you might think 'hey the Mets could go 5-2'", he started to sound too much like my late night conversations trying to be presumptuous about what's an "easy win" and what's not. I know Darling finished that thought by saying that having the Pirates and Padres were more of an opportunity to get the pitching going than to get five wins. Well, that's kinda the same thing. I cringe when I hear stuff like that, because for all we know the Pirates and Padres are thinking "at least we have the Mets". And when the Pirates, the same Pirates that couldn't hit a lick versus Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, saw that lineup the Mets threw out there on Monday, they had to be licking their chops.

Then again, Vinny Rottino was a better option than Ike Davis at this point, and Erik Bedard is deadly against lefties, so why the heck not. And hey, that lineup that looks more like Buffalo's lineup at first glance did get four runs pretty much right off the bat (just six short of the ten I thought this lineup might get). And I'm starting to write the post in my head which starts out as "Erik Bedard should be ashamed of himself." But then the lineup stopped. And Johan Santana let the Pirates back in the game by giving up four runs of his own, including a bomb to some guy named Michael McKenry. McKenry is a 5'10" 215 pound fire hydrant, and he hit one to the damn moon. Unfreakingbelievable.

And then came ...

And this is why Mike Baxter's worth is as a pinch hitter and not as an everyday player. Dude, get out of the way before that ball you force Kirk Nieuwenhuis to drop turns into a three base error and the winning run in the ninth!!! Upon further review, Kirk clearly ... clearly was calling for the baseball.

No, instead it's a truly disgusting loss for the Mets. Yeah, 5-2 this week. Get the pitching going. Easy as pie. Right.
