Brandon Moss homered in his fourth consecutive game, Travis Blackley earned his first victory in nearly eight years and the Oakland Athletics beat the San Diego Padres 10-2 on Friday night to extend their longest winning streak of the season. Moss's two-run shot off starter Randy Bass (2-7) capped a five-run first inning and marked the sixth time in nine games that the A's first baseman has homered since being called up from the minors. Josh Reddick and Cliff Pennington had two RBIs each for Oakland. The second-lowest scoring team in the American League going into the game, the A's have scored 36 runs in their last four games. Blackley (1-2) pitched six strong innings for his first win since July 1, 2004, when he made his major league debut with Seattle. The left-hander wound up back in the minors with the Mariners and spent time with San Francisco, Philadelphia, Arizona and the New York Mets - he even pitched in Korea - trying to get back to the big leagues before Oakland claimed him off waivers from the Giants. Blackley pitched out of a jam in the first then calmed down after giving up San Diego's second run an inning later. He retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced, finishing with three strikeouts and two walks. Evan Scribner allowed one runner over the final three innings for Oakland for his first save. Carlos Quentin had two hits and an RBI for San Diego, which lost for just the second time in seven interleague games this season. Earlier in the day the A's parted ways with Manny Ramirez after the 40-year-old slugger asked for his release and the team granted his request. Ramirez signed a minor league contract with the A's in February and served a 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy last year, but remained in the minors when the ban ended on May 30. He was batting .302 with 14 RBIs in 17 games with Triple-A Sacramento when he asked out of his contract with Oakland. Moss is no Manny but he has definitely provided a boost for the A's offense since being called up from the minors on June 6. He homered in each of Oakland's three games at Colorado this week then put the A's up 5-1 in the first inning against San Diego with a two-run blast off Bass. It was the first time an A's player has hit a home run in four consecutive games since Jack Cust in 2007. The Padres cut it to 5-2 when Alexi Amarista tripled and scored on Chris Denorfia's single in the second. Pennington doubled in Collin Cowgill in the fourth then scored on Coco Crisp's infield single, giving Oakland a 7-2 lead. Bass (2-7), who has not won since going eight innings to beat Washington on May 15, struck out three and was charged with nine runs, seven earned. Bass walked the first two batters he faced then surrendered a two-out double to Reddick, three batters before Moss homered. He gave up two runs in the fourth then left after giving up consecutive one-out singles in the sixth. Brad Boxberger replaced Bass but made a critical throwing error to center field after appearing to have easily caught Cowgill trying to steal second. Kurt Suzuki scored on the play and Cowgill later scored on Pennington's single. Notes: Oakland's 36 runs are its most over a four-game stretch since they scored 48 from June 6-9, 2004. ... Pennington celebrated his 28th birthday on Friday and has driven in at least one run on each of his last three birthdays. ... The umpiring crew of Tim McClelland, Brian Runge, Ted Barrett and Mike Muchlinski was the same one that worked San Francisco pitcher Matt Cain's perfect game on Wednesday. ... The A's signed their first-round draft pick, SS Addison Russell. The team has signed or agreed to terms with 23 of their 43 picks. ... RHP Ross Ohlendorf (1-0) will make his first start of the season Saturday for the Padres, making him the 12th starter San Diego has used already this year. That's the most since the 2009 team had 12 for the entire season. Oakland plans to call up RHP Tyson Ross (2-6) from Triple-A Sacramento to start opposite Ohlendorf. ... The Padres agreed to terms on a $3 million contract with LHP Max Fried of Harvard-Westlake H.S., the seventh overall pick in the amateur draft.

Manny Ramirez's Upside Could Be Valuable to Orioles, Other Outfield-Needy Teams

When the Oakland Athletics released Manny Ramirez on Friday after just 17 minor league games, the next logical question became: Where does he go from here? The 40-year-old Ramirez, who broke into the majors in 1993, still wants to play, but does it make sense for any team to sign him at this point? Interested teams would have to deal with several risks. First, Ramirez has already...

The Oakland A's recalled right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross and infielder Eric Sogard from Class AAA Sacramento and sent down right-handed pitcher Evan Scribner and infielder Adam Rosales to Sacramento, the team announced Saturday. The A's also sent first baseman Kila Ka'aihue to Sacramento and clearing waivers. Ross is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in four Class AAA starts and...

A's release Manny Ramirez at his request

Manny Ramirez played 17 games at Class AAA Sacramento, and that was enough for him. Ramirez, whose 555 homers are the eighth most by a right-handed hitter in major league history, asked for and was granted his release by the Oakland A's on Friday. He had not homered during his minor league stint. He had been hitting better recently, however, batting .371 (13-for-35) with...

According to the Associated Press, the Oakland Athletics have granted Manny Ramirez permission to be released from the team. The left fielder was released Friday as he is now a free agent. “The A’s treated me amazingly during all this time, but sadly didn’t have space for me and this is something I can’t control,” Ramirez told ESPNDeportes.com’s Enrique Rojas by phone...

Athletics 8, Rockies 2

Jarrod Parker allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings and Brandon Moss drove in three runs, helping the Oakland Athletics beat the slumping Colorado Rockies 8-2 on Thursday for their first series sweep on the road since the end of the 2010 season. Parker (3-3) was bumped up a spot in the rotation due to Brandon McCarthy's sore shoulder. The righty allowed just three...

Manny Ramirez Has Had Long, Strange Career with Indians, Red Sox, Dodgers and More (Photos)

Manny Ramirez's latest baseball comeback hit a hiccup Friday when he asked the Oakland Athletics for his release. Ramirez had been playing for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats after serving a suspension for drug use, but when it became clear that the A's were not going to promote Ramirez in the near future, the 40-year-old slugger requested to be released, in the hopes...

Phillies Acquire Outfielder Jason Pridie

The Phillies have made an acquisition today by signing outfielder Jason Pridie to the club. Pridie, 28, was immediately optioned to Triple-A Lehigh where he will try to make the big league club. Pridie hit .281 with four home runs and 20 RBI in 101 games last season for the Mets. Pridie elected free-agency at the end of last season and signed a minor-league deal with the Oakland...

Rockies Notes: Tulo Injury Update

After blowing a pair of leads to the Athletics on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Rockies never lead on Thursday as only a ninth inning rally prevented the National League's best offense from getting shutout at home. Colorado couldn't touch Oakland rookie Jarrod Parker as the Rockies had a man reach second base only twice while Parker was in the game.

Padres-Athletics Preview

The Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres are both feeling confident after sweeping their respective series this week. Each club will be looking for a fourth consecutive victory Friday night when they meet in Oakland for the first time since 2000. After being swept in Arizona last weekend, Oakland (29-35) scored 26 runs in a three-game sweep of Colorado at Coors Field. The offensive...
