The Oakland Athletics have signed Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to a four-year deal worth $36mm, Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reports. Cespedes will earn $9mm in each year of the deal. The deal sets the table for Cespedes to potentially start the season in Oakland. Peter Gammons of MLB network adds that Cespedes representatives felt “the A’s wanted him more than anyone else.”
Cespedes is a 6-0, 215-pound center fielder that is considered to be a “five tool” player.
The Marlins had recently made Cespedes an offer last week when he went to Miami to visit tour the new ballpark and were considered by many to be the favorites. The deal was believed to be $36mm for six-years (contract info provided by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports).
