Sports Injury Alert:
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Sonny Gray had a very good rookie season after coming up in mid-July, going 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA in 12 games, 10 of them starts. He also had a solid postseason in which he allowed only three runs in 13 innings over two starts against the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS. He pitched eight shutout innings in Game 2. The Athletics won 1-0 in the ninth inning. Gray’s only blemish was that he took the loss, 3-0, in the decisive Game 5 while throwing five innings. It is tough to win when the offense fails to score.
Part of the reason he gave up those three runs was a fracture that he suffered near the end of his outing. The right-hander fractured the thumb on his pitching hand. The San Francisco Chronicles‘ Athletics beat writer Susan Slusser tweeted on Friday, October 18, that Gray had a screw implanted in the thumb earlier in the day to help secure the bone.

In 2013, the Athletics used the month of September to regain the lead after a three game deficit. However, both years the Oakland Athletics have gone into the postseason, they have faced the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS...
Now that the season is over for the Oakland Athletics, it is time to recuperate. A few of the Athletics acquired some injuries just before or during the postseason. Even though most of these injuries are not too serious, it is definitely troubling that they will have to have surgery to fix these problems.

Oakland Athletics rookie right-hander Sonny Gray has undergone surgery on his left thumb.
The procedure Thursday was performed by Dr. Thomas Graham at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital. Gray had a screw inserted to repair a fracture, which Gray sustained on a comebacker from Detroit's Prince Fielder in Oakland's Game 5 division series loss Oct. 10.

Perhaps wanting to follow in the footsteps of his fellow "Bash Brother" Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco is lobbying for another shot at employment within Major League Baseball. This time, like McGwire, as a hitting coach. There's no word on how a future gig as the Rox hitting coach would interfere with Canseco's career as a film star, podcaster, amateur boxer...
Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market.
Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each...
