Baseball Instinct is rolling out their Top 360 Prospect list and so far through the first 60 player profiles, the Mets have four prospects. 345°. Juan Urbina, LHP Mets 5/31/1993  - The son of Ugeth Urbina, Juan has the bloodlines of an MLBer. He’s still growing into his 6’3″ frame and should work in the low 90s from the left side in time. It’s his CU, already an above average offering, that makes him one to watch. He repeats well and the CU has hard fade. He also has a SL in the arsenal which is in development. He’s a long way off and things will need to click, if they do he has mid-rotation SP upside. ETA 2015. 314°. Jefry Marte, 3B, Mets, 6/21/1991 – A 2011 Futures Game invitee, Marte is one of a few 3B prospects for the Mets that have nice future power potential. His 16% K rate at age 20, is excellent and some bad luck led to the .248 AVG. The 22 doubles and 7 HR in 483 AB in the FSL tell me that Marte is in the early stages of power development but profiles for above average pow...

Mets continue to look for a backup shortstop

In case you were nervous that the signing of Omar Quintanilla, who hit .047 last season, would keep the New York Mets from pursuing Jack Wilson, or other back up shortstops, worry no more!  That was a sarcastic explanation point as I doubt any of you were biting your nails.  If you were, however, the good news is that a team source has indicated to Andy Martino of the Daily News...

David Wright’s 2011, offense, and fielding struggles

In a post to Mets Today, Joe Janish takes a closer look at David Wright‘s 2011 and writes: David Wright suffered through his worst professional season in 2011. … In addition to his offensive problems, Wright’s defense has steadily and dramatically regressed since winning a Gold Glove in 2007 and 2008. … Again, his broken back may have played a part in his poor defense ...

Scott Hairston to re-sign with the Mets

Photo by Michael BaronAccording to Joel Sherman the Mets have re-signed Scott Hairston, it's not specified by Sherman at this time but there are reports that it's a minor league deal. Just like last year Hairston is a solid pick-up, he can play all three outfield positions and hit off the bench for power.  His first season with the Mets wasn't great but compared to what...

Mets sign Ruben Tejada’s backup

I never thought I would be saying this, but the New York Mets have signed a backup shortstop for Ruben Tejada… The New York Mets have signed the 30-year-old middle infielder Omar Quintanilla. Quintanilla is a career .213 hitter in parts of six major-league seasons, Quintanilla was 1-for-23 last year with the Rangers. This is definitely not a significant deal, and won’t have...

How The Mets Match Up: Braves

Catcher: McCann is the better ballplayer...and its not even close.  This is not just a case of experience over youth.  McCann is far better behind the plate and while they sport a similar batting average, McCann offers an element of power that will never be part of Jose Thole's arsenal.1st Base: Despite being two years his senior, Ike Davis and Freddie Freeman have roughly...

Mets Re-Sign Hairston, Open to Harris Return, While Marlins Add Zambrano, AND SO I RANT.

I know the Mets seem to be only making minor tweaks to a team that needs a serious influx of talent, and it sucks.  But even-so, here’s the news… #bbpBox_154938226208018432 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_154938226208018432 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; }Can now confirm that Scott Hairston was indeed re-signed by #Metsabout 2 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite...

My 1962 Mets Yearbook

I’m not typically a big memorabilia guy. However, my step dad gave this authentic, in-great-condition 1962 Mets Yearbook, which I was really excited about. Flushing Meadows Stadium? Really? Who’s better than Ralph Kiner? Anyone? They tell me this is worth less because the original owner made handwritten updates to the team’s roster throughout the season. I don...

Sandy says Johan is ready, priorities, rotation, etc.

Johan Santana is roughly three weeks in to his off-season throwing program, Sandy Alderson said today during a conference call with the team’s beat reporters. According to Alderson, Santana is throwing on consecutive days and from about 75 feet. ”We expect to see him in Spring Training and ready to go at that point,” he said. In addition, Alderson said: He is looking to fill...

Should Mike Pelfrey be moved to the bullpen?

In response to a question about Mike Pelfrey being used as a closer, MLB.com reporter Anthony DiComo says: “The Mets effectively nixed this idea last summer, despite the fact that it intrigued both Pelfrey and manager Terry Collins. …. It would be fascinating to see how Pelfrey might fare in the bullpen, considering such a role would allow him to rely more heavily on his low...

Mets sign Wimberly and Stevens to MiLB

Adam Rubin reports that the Mets have signed RHP Jeff Stevens and Utility player Corey Wimberly to minor league deals.  Both appear destine for Buffalo but Stevens did make it up for 10 appearances with the Cubs last year and Wimberly was a candidate for the Pirates bench out of spring training. Wimberly is a 27 y/o switch hitter who in seven minor league seasons carries a .297...
