The LA Dodgers got back Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier for their second-half playoff run last week, and with their return LA was very popular among those handing out free MLB picks during its weekend series vs. San Diego. But even though Kemp and Ethier batted .500 on the weekend, LA managed to lose two of three games to the Padres, and gave up first place in the NL West in the process.
The Dodgers won Friday night's series opener 2-1, with Clayton Kershaw picking up the victory. But Saturday LA blew a game in a manner rarely seen, when closer Kenley Jansen, with two outs and two strikes in the top of the ninth, fell asleep, allowed a Padre runner to steal home, then threw the ball away, allowing the winning run to score in a 7-6 head-slapper.
Then Sunday the Dodgers gave up three runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth to lose 7-2.
Kemp, who didn't play Sunday, and Ethier combined to go 10-for-20 on the weekend with five RBI, but LA still only scored a total of 10 runs for the series.
So the Dodgers begin this week at 48-42 and a game and a half back of first-place San Francisco in the NL West. LA is also two games behind the Braves and Pirates in the NL Wild-Card race.
The Dodgers now host the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game series starting Monday night. Los Angeles will throw Nathan Eovaldi (1-5, 4.21) Monday and Kershaw (7-5, 2.84) Wednesday, but hasn't announced a starter for Tuesday. Philly will go with Joe Blanton (7-8, 4.98), Roy Halladay (4-5, 3.98) and Cliff Lee (1-6, 3.92).
The Dodgers are 12-7 in games Kershaw has started this year, but 1-7 in games Eovaldi has started, although that's not all his fault.
The Phillies, meanwhile, are 9-8 in Blanton's starts this year, but just 4-7 in Halladay's and a dismal 4-11 in Lee's starts.
As of Monday morning Bovada is listing the Dodgers as -120 favorites to win the series with the Phillies.
