John Bowker is going to Japan

The Phillies released John Bowker this week to let him pursue a contract in Japan. This is not a huge deal at all. I always thought that based on his minor league numbers, Bowker deserved more of a chance with the Pirates, but it was clear both in Pittsburgh and San Francisco before that there was something about Bowker that his front offices and managers didn't think would translate...

Former Giants outfielder John Bowker to play in Japan

In a combined 31 major league games between the Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates last season, Bowker, 28, batted .133 with two RBI.  He spent the majority of the 2011 season at triple...

Phillies Release John Bowker So He Can Play In Japan

This is not the first time the Phillies have released a player so that he can pursue an opportunity to play somewhere else. Think back to November when Scott Mathieson was released. The Phillies picked up Bowker in late August, but he didn't prove to be much of a help. The 28 year-old outfielder went 0-13 in 13 at bats, striking out 7 times in 12 games for the Phillies.

The Phillies final splash (albeit a tiny ripple) of last season’s trade market is no longer with the team. Left-handed hitting outfielder John Bowker was released by the Phillies Tuesday so he can pursue playing in Japan, the team said. The move is reminiscent of when the Phils let pitcher Scott Mathieson go the same route earlier this offseason. But let’s talk about Bowker’s...

Bowker's Release Should Have Come Earlier

John Bowker asked the Phillies for his unconditional release to pursue a playing opportunity in Japan. The Phillies granted the request, but they should have been the one initiating the move and it should have come earlier this offseason.
