Brandon McCarthy was dominant on Saturday, blanking the Miami Marlins for his first win not only with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but also since being struck in the head with an Erick Aybar line-drive on August 5, 2012 against the Los Angeles Angels. McCarthy registered his third career shutout (his first since September 3, 2011 against the Seattle Mariners) in a 1-0 victory over the Miami Marlins. I n going the distance, McCarthy allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out five batters. The Arizona starter threw an impressive 68 strikes and needed only 99 pitches to finish the game. The only run of the game, surprisingly enough, came on the very first pitch of the game, a solo home run by Arizona left fielder Gerardo Parra. After a rough start to the season, which saw McCarthy struggling with a 0-3 record and 6.75 ERA in 40.0 innings of work, McCarthy has rebounded magnificently over his past two starts. Following a scoreless eight-inning performance against the Philadelphia Phillies on May 12, McCarthy continued with Saturday’s gem, now the owner of a more respectable 4.74 ERA and a solid 37/8 strikeout to walk ratio in 57.0 innings. Questions concerning confidence and performance in the wake of McCarthy’s head injury late last season have surrounded the Arizona starter all season; however, back-to-back exceptional pitching performances have quelled some of those questions and will serve as confidence builders in future starts. With the 1-0 victory, the Arizona Diamondbacks improve to 25-18 on the season, maintaining a one game lead over the San Francisco Giants in the NL West standings.

D-backs catcher, pitcher combine for circus catch

Your browser does not support iframes. Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero and pitcher Josh Collmenter combined for an impressive circus catch on a popup in the eighth inning of Sunday night's game at Marlin Park. Miami Marlins batter Adeiny Hechavarria tried to bunt the ball, but popped it up down the third base line. Montero chased it and failed to catch it, but...

Diamondbacks 1, Marlins 0

Brandon McCarthy pitched a three-hitter for his first win since being struck in the head by a line drive last season, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Saturday night. Gerardo Parra led off the game with a home run for Arizona, which has won four in a row while dealing the Marlins a season-long seven-game losing streak. McCarthy (1-3) struck out five...

Collmenter makes perhaps catch of the year

The 2-1 putout isn't a common one in baseball; most of the ones that do occur are on wild pitchespassed balls that result in the pitcher covering the plate. So how does a pitcher record a 2-1 putout on a ball that never touches the ground? Diamondbacks reliever Josh Collmenter did just that in Sunday's game against the Marlins -- with an assist (literally) from catcher Miguel...

Parra throws out runner, busts out finger wag

Diamondbacks right fielder Gerardo Parra is widely known to have one of the best arms in all of baseball. Over the past three seasons, while playing mostly in a part-time role in Arizona's crowded outfield, Parra has totaled nine, 12 and eight assists, with the middle number coming in 2011, when he earned his first Gold Glove. He also already has six assists this year, leading...

Going...Going...Gone! Arizona Diamondbacks Gerardo Parra Now Has Something in Common With Pete Rose

Arizona's 1-0 win over the Miami Marlins gave the Diamondbacks a record of 25-18 and a one game lead over the San Francisco Giants in the NL West. The one run came courtesy of a solo home run by Gerardo Parra in the first inning. What does that have to do with Pete Rose? Well, the home run--and only run--came on the first pitch of the game. The last time that happened...

Diamondbacks' pitcher and catcher combine for crazy circus catch

It's not often you get to see a pitcher and a catcher combine to make a circus catch on a routine bunt but that's exactly what happened when the Diamondbacks' Josh Collmentor and Miguel Montero did it against the Miami Marlins on Sunday. The Arizona catcher Montero bobbled the pop-up bunt and deflected it into bare hand of relief pitcher Collmentor for an assist and...

Paul Goldschmidt Homers Twice to Lead Arizona to Victory

Paul Goldschmidt’s two home runs led the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 9-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Friday night, the first game in a three-game series in Miami. The two-homer game is Goldschmidt’s second multi-home run game in his young career, the first occurring on May 18, 2012 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He would finish the game with a career high 4 hits and 4 RBI...

''Watch the kid, watch the way he stays with his approach, he's dangerous,'' Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. Goldschmidt hit a two...

D-backs look to finish off sweep, win fifth straight

Facing an offensively challenged Miami team that's been particularly bad against left-handers lately, Wade Miley appears to be in a good spot to rebound from his worst outing of the season. Miley will try to keep the Marlins' bats quiet and lead the Diamondbacks to their fifth straight win in the finale of a three-game series at Marlins Park on Sunday. The D-backs (25-18...
