MILWAUKEE When Yovani Gallardo walked off of the field at Miller Park to a standing ovation on Sunday afternoon, he had no idea that he'd just thrown the most strikeouts (14) in a single game in his career. Gallardo didn't actually learn of his career effort until one of the Brewers' other starters told him so in the clubhouse after the game. For a team that has become one of the best strikeout clubs in the majors, it was just another swing-and-miss extravaganza, as the Brewers took the series from the first-place Pirates, winning 4-1 on Sunday. "It's amazing when you look up there on the board and see how many," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "That's a lot of strikeouts, and our guys have enough stuff where they can do that. When they're commanding the ball, those numbers will always be there." Gallardo's 14 strikeouts was the best performance, strikeout-wise, by a Brewers pitcher this season. But the team has had plenty of si...

Gallardo K's 14 as Brewers top Bucs

Yovani Gallardo struck out a career-high 14 in seven innings and the Milwaukee Brewers used a four-run sixth to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 on Sunday. Gallardo (8-6) gave up four hits, including Andrew McCutchen's homer in the fourth. Gallardo struck out two in every inning except the sixth and the side in the seventh. A.J. Burnett's nine-game winning streak ended...

Brewers expect Marcum's return in August

MILWAUKEE When Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Shaun Marcum was scratched from a start against his former team on June 19, the belief was that Marcum wouldn't be out more than a start or two with elbow tightness. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke and Marcum himself both said that they expected the Brewers No. 3 pitcher to be back after the All-Star break. But on Sunday, a few days after...

Brewers' Axford endures another blown save

MILWAUKEE John Axford trudged off the mound with his head down, slower than usual. Boos rained downon him in his home park, as he walked off the field, having blown his sixth save of the season. But this blown save holding onto a 2-0 lead with two outs in the ninth inning against a division rival was by far the most cruel in a season that hasn't been short on cruelty for...

Brewers' Rodriguez still hopes to close again

MILWAUKEE Francisco Rodriguez is fiddling with his smart phone, sitting in the leather chair next to his locker, when he's asked about how he has settled into his role as the Milwaukee Brewers setup man. It's been almost a year to the day that Rodriguez was in a Milwaukee uniform for the first time. He stops abruptly and looks up from his phone. He clearly doesn't like...

Brewers frustrated by mistakes in close game

MILWAUKEE A six-inning effort from Marco Estrada was enough to give the Brewers a one-run lead heading into the seventh inning of Saturday's game against the first-place Pirates. But as they have been for much of the season, Saturday's one-run lead wasn't very kind to the Brewers. This time, it was defensive lapses that were the cause of Milwaukee's late-inning...

Brewers scratch Greinke from Wednesday start

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee Brewers starter Zack Greinke has been scratched from his scheduled start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The 2009 American League Cy Young award winner has been the subject of trade speculation, but there was no immediate indication that he had been traded or sustained any significant injury. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke is expected to...

Milwaukee Brewers trade rumors: selling at the deadline?

The Milwaukee Brewers are currently buried in 4th place in the NL Central, but they remain the hunt by a slim margin. They have a lot of catching up to do and must decide in the next few weeks if they are going to sell off some of their key trade deadline candidates or are [...]

GM Melvin: Greinke 'recharging his batteries'

The Milwaukee Brewers announced Zack Greinke won't start Wednesday's game as scheduled but did not offer additional explanation. FOX Sports reported general manager Doug Melvin denied a trade was in the works and said Greinke was "recharging his batteries." Greinke has yielded 14 runs in 14 innings this month. He was scheduled to start Wednesday against the...

Zack Greinke, Ryan Dempster Are Among Standouts That Could Be Dealt Soon

With the July 31 trade deadline approaching, a handful of players are being dangled as trade bait. Whether it's All-Star caliber players, borderline standouts or role players, there's a bevy of talent available. A player's contract -- and the emergence of farm hands -- usually triggers the process. Before the swapping season begins, took a look at the biggest...

Cardinals-Brewers Preview

Sitting in fourth place in the NL Central, the Milwaukee Brewers know their upcoming efforts could be make or break. With things starting to finally go their way, the Brewers look for their recent momentum to carry over Monday night in the first of three with the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, winners of 10 of 13 in this series. After winning its first division title since 1982...

Game 88: Brewers 4 Pirates 1

This one gave me a sort of uneasy feeling right from the start. Yovani Gallardo was mowing down the Pirates from the get go and AJ Burnett got himself into trouble in the first, second, and fifth innings, but managed to avoid any damage. Both Drew Sutton and Garrett Jones made clumsy-looking plays in the outfield, as if to foreshadow how much of a problem the Pirates' lack of...

Winning the series

Two of three. Two of three. Two of three. Sweeps are sexy and sweeps move the win/loss record and sweeps can make a big change in the standings, but if you just keep on winning two of three, the wins will eventually pile up. The Brewers and Pirates have played some ugly baseball in this series, but with a win this afternoon, the Pirates get two of three. Win today, worry about tomorrow...
