The Cincinnati Reds had the majors' best home record earlier this month. They've hardly been playing their best at Great American Ball Park since then. The Reds open a seven-game homestand Friday night against the improving Milwaukee Brewers, who could be without Ryan Braun again. After being denied a four-game sweep over the Chicago Cubs with Thursday's 6-5, 14-inning defeat, Cincinnati (40-27) will face the Brewers (27-38) for the second time this season after sweeping them at Great American Ball Park from May 10-12. The Reds were a MLB-best 21-7 at home three weeks later, but they've been outscored 39-18 while losing four of five to visiting teams. Friday's starter Bronson Arroyo (6-5, 3.35 ERA) is 5-1 with a 2.68 ERA in eight home starts after throwing six innings of two-run ball in Sunday's 11-4, 10-inning loss to St. Louis. The right-hander was hit on the knee by a one-hopper in the fourth, but the injury doesn't seem like it will impact him mo...

Video: Watch Jay Bruce launch walk-off home run

Your browser does not support iframes. Jay Bruce entered Friday with four walk-off home runs in his career. The Reds All-Star right fielder had five by the night's end. Bruce's solo blast in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted Cincinnati past the visiting Brewers, 4-3, and sparked a celebration at home plate. It marked the 11th homer of the season for Bruce and it...

Phillips imitates teammate's stance

Your browser does not support iframes. Brandon Phillips was in a playful mood Wednesday afternoon after Todd Frazier belted a go-ahead home run during the seventh inning. Frazier's blast put the Reds in front, 2-1, at the time and proved to be the decisive blow as Cincinnati recorded its 12th straight victory at Wrigley Field. Frazier was immediately greeted in the dugout...

Signing Zach Duke for bullpen insurance

Zach Duke pitching for the Washington Nationals. The Cincinnati Reds signed former Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Zach Duke today. Duke is expected to join the AAA Louisville Bats. As far as the signing goes, I think the key part about it is that Duke is left handed. Currently, the only left-handed relievers in the Reds’ bullpen are Manny Parra and Aroldis Chapman. Chapman is the closer...

Baker says Chapman staying put - no 2-inning saves

CINCINNATI The once nearly impenetrable Cincinnati Reds bullpen suddenly has sprung more leaks than a colander, particularly in the critical eighth inning, so the constituents in the stands are asking: Why not use closer Aroldis Chapman in the eighth and ninth? It is not going to happen no discussion, no debate, no but, but, but, buts.Manager Dusty Baker is as adamant about his...

Reds to hold mass wedding at Great American Ball Park

If you and your special someone have been thinking about tying the knot lately than I have just the time and place for you two to do so. On Friday, August 2, the Reds are offering couples the chance to say "I do" in the first ever mass wedding at Great American Ball Park. The couples will have the opportunity to exchange vows on the field before the Reds play host...

Cincinnati Reds: A family feud in left field

I hopped on a blog website a couple days ago, and one of the first posts I read was “Xavier Paul: Why is he still here?” Derrick Robinson might be one of the fastest guys on the Reds. His speed has helped turn many single hits, into doubles. Then, in the third game of the most recent series against the Cubs, he went 2-4 with a run, a double and  a homer that brought in three...

Latos Looks to Continue Strong Pitching in Chicago

The Cincinnati Reds have gotten back on track in their series against the Chicago Cubs, largely due to their performance on the mound. The Reds appear to have a good chance to continue that outstanding pitching and their lengthy winning streak at Wrigley Field with Mat Latos taking the ball in Thursday's finale.Mike Leake provided the latest strong outing Wednesday when he allowed...

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jay Bruce homered off Burke Badenhop with one out in the 10th inning on Friday night, rallying the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in a game full of errors and wasted chances. It was Cincinnati's second straight extra-inning game. The Reds fell 6-5 in 14 innings at Wrigley Field on Thursday, leaving their bullpen depleted. Bruce...

Where do the 2013 draft picks fit in on the prospect lists?

Brewers hope to have Ryan Braun back in starting lineup this weekend

Ryan Braun's ailing hand has once again kept him out of a game.  Braun was not in the starting lineup last night, but he was available as a pinch-hitter.  The Milwaukee Brewers destroyed the Marlins, though, and did not need to have Braun hit.  The All-Star outfielder is frustrated, but the team is hoping to have him back in the starting lineup by the weekend. According...

Betancourt, Chapman, and the Sordid Business of Defection

(Image: AP/David J. Phillip) This weekend’s three-game series between the Reds and Brewers includes two players – Yuniesky Betancourt and Aroldis Chapman – who took a more tortured path than most to the big leagues.  Both are Cuban players who defected from their home country to play professionally in the United States. As someone of Cuban heritage, I’m particularly...

Weekly batch of Reds news and notes

by: Dan Howard Staff Writer Welcome to the readers of The Mountain Citizen, a weekly paper located in Inez, Ky. They are scheduled to print my posts beginning in late June. I want to thank The Mountain Citizen Editor Gary Ball and their Sports Editor Ron Hickman for this opportunity. I guess the St. Louis Cardinals really are that good. I can’t understand how the Reds...

Reds look to extend winning streak against Brewers

Although the Milwaukee Brewers are thriving at the plate during Ryan Braun's absence, they couldn't end their struggles against the Cincinnati Reds last time out. With Braun now on the disabled list, the Brewers will try to snap a five-game skid to their NL Central rivals and avoid losing for a 10th time in 11 games in Cincinnati on Saturday. Milwaukee (27-39) is batting...

In Biogenesis case, 3 players are key

Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun are the biggest stars linked to Major League Baseball's investigation of the now-defunct Biogenesis wellness clinic. But for the purposes of the 2013 season, they aren't the most important. Of all the names to emerge in reports about Biogenesis, only three are key contributors on contending teams: Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, Texas...
