According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, Henry Blanco is at the top of the Diamondbacks list to be their backup catcher. “He’s considered a great clubhouse guy and a mentor/coach-on-the-field type.” writes Piecoro. Earlier today, I wrote: “Earlier in the off-season, I thought the Mets would consider bringing Blanco back in 2011, but given his age, fragility, and limitations at age 40, along with the other options available on the market, I would think it’s less likely he will return now.” I don’t think it’s out of the question that Blanco could return to the Mets. But his ability to be a productive and reliable player at this point is a big question mark, and despite the value he might bring to the team as a mentor, at the end of the day, if he’s on the roster, he has to be able to play to a certain level.
