Found February 01, 2013 on Mets Fever:
PLAYERS: Marlon Byrd
TEAMS: New York Mets
According to multiple reports the Mets have signed Marlon Byrd to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.  The 35 y/o has a leg up on the competition because of his veteran experience and he bats righty while hitting double digit home runs in four straight seasons.Byrd can play center and is a lifetime .278 BA but last year hit only .210 in 143 AB.  There's no risk to bringing him in as a minor leaguer. The Mets were linked to Byrd several times under Omar.

Mets add depth to pen with LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Atchinson

While a sizable amount of press has been devoted to the possible acquisitions of Michael Bourn or Brian Wilson, Sandy Alderson has methodically been adding pitchers to the organization’s choices for the 2013 iteration of the Mets bullpen staff. One such signing is the January 31st signing of LaTroy Hawkins. Hawkins, age 40, is an 18 year veteran of the major leagues and now...

Alderson Mets still have OF options

Even after the Marlon Byrd signing Marc Carig of Newsday tweeted that Sandy Alderson says the Mets still have options for the outfield.  Many have speculated in the last few hours that Byrd along with the other outfield candidates have essentially ended any pursuit of Michael Bourn. Don't forget the Mets signed veteran Fred Lewis last season and tucked him away in AAA until...

The New York Mets announced Friday that they signed outfielder Marlon Byrd to a minor league contract. Byrd, 35, batted .210 in 47 games with the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox last year. He was also suspended 50 games for testing positive for Tamoxifen, a drug that is reportedly used to prevent post-testosterone-cycle crashes. Byrd has 82 home runs and 445 RBI in his 11-year career.

Is Jose Valverde worth the risk for the Mets?

The Mets lack a reliable reliever, and although they have some younger talent who could potentially fill the void, virtually everyone in the bullpen is a question mark. Over the weekend, rumors arose that the Mets were thinking about pursuing the flamboyant closer, Jose Valverde. The Mets do desperately need an arm in the bullpen to add some depth, and to replace their current closer...

MMO Book Review: Swinging ’73: Baseball’s Wildest Season

A couple of weeks ago, the great Mets historian and author Matt Silverman, was nice enough to give me a sneak preview into his newest publication, Swinging ’73: Baseball’s Wildest Season. The verdict is in, and Matt has done it again – delivering another Amazin’ Book that should be a part of every Met fan’s library. This isn’t your regular everyday telling of the “Ya...

Russ Canzler and why it is worth it for the Mets to take a chance on

OF/1B Russ Canzler was designated for assignment for the forth time this offseason, this time by the New York Yankees. What separates Canzler from, lets say Nick Evans, is the fact that he never clears waivers, explaining how he has gone from Cleveland to Toronto, back to Cleveland to the Yankees, all since last season ended. Last year, Chris Schwinden went on a similar path, being...

Dollar Menu

It's almost as if ... when the fans charged the gates of Citi Field screaming for an outfielder, screaming specifically for Michael Bourn ... the Wilpons thought "Okay, think. You can do this. You got your lunch for a dollar at McDonald's." And then ... Marlon Byrd. And coincidentally, McDonald's is where Sandy Alderson took him to dinner. Two for one...
