Philadelphia Phillies prospect Darrin Ruf had a storybook season in 2012 that ended with the young slugger on the major league roster in September. Fans were optimistic that Ruf could be the right handed power bat that the Phillies so desperately need, but a slow start to Spring Training 2013 has raised some questions about his development and where he belongs when the team heads North in April. The 26 year old outfielder has struggled both at the plate and defensively. Through his first 8 games he hit .130 with a double and 3 RBI’s. He had a good game today going 2 for 4 with his second double of the spring while doubling his RBI total to 6. But can he do enough to prove he belongs and earn a spot on the opening day roster? Fans were overly high on Ruf throughout the offseason while discounting the fact that Domonic Brown could very well be the guy to fill an outfield role full time. Ruf has not had the experience that Brown has had. While Brown has seemed to find himself, Ruf is l...

Stark: The Next Era of Phillies Baseball is Coming

The championship era could be coming to a close. On Wednesday afternoon Senior writer, Jayson Stark, joined 97.5 The Fanatic’s Mike Missanelli and the two had what I believe to be the preeminent conversation regarding the Phillies recent history and wondered how fans would handle the end of this great era: Stark: “The next era is coming, how soon it arrives is up to...

Roy Halladay’s velocity could be a concern

Roy Halladay is one of the most accomplished pitchers in the majors, but his velocity will likely be a concern this season and moving forward. Halladay turns 36 in May. He missed time last season with a lat injury, and he experienced shoulder problems that he attributed to a back issue. Though he pitched extremely well in April, he struggled in May before going on the disabled list...

Spring Training and WBC Through Eyes of Cole Hamels

If you want a few good quotes you go to Cole Hamels. His cavalier attitude with his words is gold for bloggers like myself. He provided us with a few more yesterday. First, Hamels offered his thoughts on playing in the World Baseball Classic:

Chase Utley and Purpose Pitches

Chase Utley gets hit by a lot of pitches. Pretty much always been that way. Over his career, about 8% of the time Utley has reached base, he’s reached base on a hit-by-pitch. He led the league in hit-by-pitches for three consecutive years between 2007-2009. Utley ranks fourth among active players in career hit-by-pitches, and he ranks 21st all-time, sneaking up quickly on Brady...

3/6 Phillies Notes and Roster Projections

Well, there's plenty to discuss today. Darin Ruf had an awful day yesterday, and I think his roster spot is in real jeopardy. This is probably the biggest worry I have right now about this team, as I'm genuinely worried about Mayberry and Nix even in a platoon. I'm also...

Player Profile #45: Cole Hamels | SP | PHI

Cole Hamels has been a dominant starting pitcher in real life baseball for the last half-decade. In four of the last five years, Hamels has finished with an ERA no worse than 3.39 and a WHIP no worse than 1.18. He’s even had an ERA under 3.10 three times and a WHIP one year that was under 1.00! (0.99 in 2011). His 2009 season was a pretty terrible follow-up to his breakout 2008...

Young completes community service

By May, as long as Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Delmon Young remains on good behavior, his name will be cleared. Young, 27, was charged with a hate crime last April after he shouted an anti-semitic slur while intoxicated, according to the New York City Police Department. He pleaded guilty to aggravated harassment and as part of the plea, agreed to serve 10 days of community...

Mark Teixeira’s Injury, Cole Hamels’ Logic Show Why World Baseball Classic Will Always Struggle to Gain Traction

The overall concept of the World Baseball Classic is intriguing. But despite the positives that accompany the global tournament, there are other factors that are both unavoidable and detrimental to its growth. First, there is an inherent uneasiness that comes with a major leaguer leaving his big league ballclub in order to join his native country for the tourney.’s Jayson...
