In his last 10 games Tim Byrdak has faced 11 batters. He has done an outstanding job, retiring 10 of the 11 batters and the only one to reach base drew a walk. Byrdak is a lefty specialist and manager Terry Collins is maximizing his use in that very role. Last year Collins did an outstanding job getting Byrdak to face a LHB in 65% of his PA. This year he is on a similar pace, facing a lefty 62 percent of the time. Byrdak’s recent stretch illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of carrying a LOOGY. The great news is that he’s done his job very well. On the flip side, Byrdak is so limited in what he can do, and the rest of the bullpen is so in need of help, one could make the argument that the 2012 Mets would be better served by carrying a real pitcher instead of a lefty specialist. Right now Byrdak is on pace to appear in 93 games. Earlier, Collins joked, ”In our case at this particular moment, Byrdak would be dead by July.” Collins knows that he can’t keep using Byrdak nearly eve...

Jeremy Hefner: Placeholder or Piece for the Future?

Injuries to Mike Pelfrey(above) and Miguel Batista have opened the door for Jeremy Hefner to show what he has got. After a season ending injury to Mike Pelfrey and some early bullpen woes, the Mets reached down to AAA and recalled Jeremy Hefner. Hefner was placed on waivers twice this offseason, and was eventually picked up by the Mets. Hefner was brought in to be insurance for...

Jeremy Hefner To Get Called Up, Rosario Promoted To Bingo, Leathersich To St. Lucie

The Mets organization plans to call up RHP Jeremy Hefner prior to tonight’s ballgame at Toronto reports Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com. Though no formal announcement has been officially made, Adam Rubin cites Manny Acosta as the most logical candidate to get the boot, whose ERA leaped to 10.53 after yet another unsightly outing from the 31-year old righty. Hefner was called up...

Mets RHP Batista leaves with sore back

Mets right-hander Miguel Batista left Saturday's start against the Blue Jays after just two innings because of a sore lower back, putting further strain on New York's bullpen. Batista warmed up to start the third but had to be replaced by right-hander Jeremy Hefner, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo before the game. Batista, 41, complained of groin and hamstring pain...

Santana Gives Up Early Lead As the Mets Fall to Bucs 5-4

There’s no other way to put tonight but this way, it was a disappointment.  The Mets were given a 4-0 lead by the Pirates and Erik Bedard early, only to watch Santana give it up on a late inning long ball.  Ultimately, the Mets would lose on something they themselves were unable to do earlier in the game…hit a sacrifice fly. Michael McKenry‘s two-run game tying homer off...

Mejia Makes First AA Start On Comeback Trail

Mets RHP Jenrry Mejia made his first AA start on Saturday afternoon as he works to come back from last year’s Tommy John Surgery (TJS). Mejia didn’t figure into the decision in the game, but he went the first three innings giving up one run on six hits, with three strikeouts. Darin Gorski made his first relief appearance of the year in relief of Mejia, who was on the hook for...

On The Road With Petey Pete: New Britain, CT & The Binghamton Mets

Let’s see, do I have everything? Lap-top, check. Digital camera, check. Voice recorder check. Sandwiches check. Cell phone, of course, looks like I’m ready to go! New Britain here I come and I will be preceded by the Double-A version of a wrecking crew from Binghamton known as the B-Mets. I sent word ahead, a little advanced warning so-to-speak, when I reached out to Matt den...

Starting Lineup, Game Preview: Mets @ Blue Jays

Starting Lineup Andres Torres – CF Mike Baxter – DH Daniel Murphy – 2B Lucas Duda – RF Ike Davis – 1B Justin Turner – 3B Kirk Nieuwenhuis – LF Ronny Cedeno – SS Mike Nickeas – C Game Preview Last night’s game was a stinker. This afternoon the Mets look to bounce back as they take on the Blue Jays for game two. Anyway, in this afternoon’s game Miguel Batista...

Is it time to send Ike Davis to Triple-A?

If Jason Bay doesn’t start hitting before the All-Star break, I don’t think he’ll be the starting left fielder at the end of the season. But, if he does start hitting, the Mets have a right handed power bat in their lineup, who once hit more than 30 homers a season. These next two months are crucial for Jason Bay. Bay has to prove that he can still hit the ball and that he...

Pre Game: New York Mets (21-19) @ Toronto Blue Jays (23-18)

Yesterday afternoon the Mets were shutout by the Blue Jays 2-0.  Brandon Morrow threw a complete game 3 hitter.  The closest the Mets came to scoring was in the 9th inning when with 1 out and a man on 1st, Mike from Whitestone lined one down the right field line and was thrown out at 2nd by Jose Bautista.  The replay showed that Baxter was safe.  Today, Dillon Gee (sans goatee...

Blue Jays 2, Mets 0

After eight innings of futility, the Mets' best chance to beat Brandon Morrow was cut short by a close call on the bases. Morrow pitched his second shutout in four starts, blanking the Mets on three hits and leading the Toronto Blue Jays over New York 2-0 on Saturday. ''Morrow was sharp tonight,'' New York's Mike Baxter said. ''He made a lot of good...

Morrow Mows Down Mets Who Lose 2-0 In Toronto

Sometimes, you just need to tip your cap… Our Mets lost 2-0 across the Northern border to the Jays on Saturday afternoon. Summary The last recap I penned had to do with Zack Greinke, and this game brought upon another great pitching talent in Brandon Morrow. Sometimes, there is absolutely nothing you can do. You can not win if you can not score. Simple as that. Brandon Morrow dominated...

Mets 6, Blue Jays 5

TORONTO -- Right-hander Dillon Gee allowed five hits and three runs over 6 2/3 innings and David Wright drove in two runs with a first-inning double as the New York Mets held off the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 on Sunday. Mike Baxter was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle before an announced crowd of 41,867 at Rogers Centre as the Mets ended their two-gake losing skid and stopped...

Mets beat Blue Jays to avoid sweep

TORONTO - Dillon Gee understands that what happens in baseball cannot always be explained. He merely proved it to himself again on Sunday when he pitched 6 2/3 innings as the New York Mets defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 before 41,867 at Rogers Centre to avoid a three-game sweep in the interleague series. "This is a crazy game, I was all over the place today," said...
