Major League Baseball announced that Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz has been suspended 25 games for testing positive for amphetamines. Some reports have surfaced that the substance Ruiz took was Adderall which is commonly used by students and athletes to stay up, focus and have more energy and can be given as a prescription by a doctor(which is not what happened in this case).
“I am sincerely regretful for my mistake in taking a prohibited stimulant. I apologize to my teammates, the Phillies organization and the Philadelphia fans. I will serve the imposed 25-game suspension to begin the season and I look forward to returning to the field and working toward bringing a championship back to Philadelphia in 2013.”
This positive test meant Ruiz tested positive prior, then got tested six additional times per year, plus the two mandatory tests all players take. Yet he continued to take this substance after testing positive already and being warned.
Ruiz hit .325/.394/.540 with 16 homers and 68 RBI in 114 games last season.
