Seattle Mariners outfielder Casper Wells hasn’t seen the field that much in this young MLB season. However, being from Schenectady, New York, when he was given the chance to start against the New York Yankees on Mother’s Day, Wells made the most of it.
Playing in front of friends and family who showed up to watch the game, Wells delivered on a simple Mother’s Day gift request from his mother Daiva: hit a home run for her. In an almost amazing turn of events, Wells drilled a two-run shot of his childhood idol Andy Pettitte in the sixth inning. Wells recalled a conversation he had with his mother before the game:
“My Mom called me and she said, ‘Just hit a homer for me!’…Oh yeah, easy request. Easy thing to do, hit a homer at Yankee Stadium!”
Before Sunday, Wells had only 19 at bats in 16 appearances. It’s safe to say he made the most of this one, as he gave his mother an unforgettable gift on a day dedicated to mothers across the world.
