“Did you hear the fans chanting MVP to Oliver Perez yesterday afternoon?” I eagerly asked my friend on Monday, October 4th, 2010 in. He snickered. “I don’t watch the Mets. You shouldn’t, either. The Yankees are going to win it all this year. It doesn’t make sense to be a Mets fan.” I sighed. “Well, maybe, but the Mets are going to be in a position to win the division again next year. Minaya and Manuel will be gone, Beltran and Reyes will be healthy, and the rotation should look better.” I replied with the upmost confidence. Despite the two consecutive losing seasons, the Mets still possessed Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, and David Wright, a young core that should have proven potent enough to drive an offense. As I awaited a reply, I received nothing but a cocky grin. “Yeah, well, when does everything ever work for the Mets? Some teams just aren’t meant to win.” he uttered. ——— I began writing about the New York Mets in my junior year of high school. Although I was an enthusiastic and rabid fan, I chose to write about baseball because there was a world to learn about. I began to follow baseball on a day-to-day basis in early-2008 and felt confident enough that I wouldn’t portray myself as a fool nearly three years later. I created Around Citi (The original website can be viewed here) with the intent to build my resume and possibly discover a future career. It was an avenue that I’m proud to have walked through every day three years later. I ventured through the now-defunct Mets Fever and gained valuable experience from Matt Ryan and his team of writers who were a pleasure to work with. I briefly joined the team at the Daily Stache and had a blast with the crew and received my first review opportunity. Both sites provided excellent opportunities that I’m very proud of. I felt something missing. It’s not that I looked to create the biggest avenue of content on the internet, but at the very least I wanted to create a website that I could dedicate to meaningful analysis and discussion. I relaunched Around Citi in January and although I’m still figuring out many aspects of the website (advertising, formatting, search engine optimization, etc), I feel that those will continue to improve with time. It’s with great pleasure that I formally announce the reason that the website has seen limited activity in recent weeks: I’m in the process of writing my first book Caught Looking: The New York Mets Dynasty That Wasn’t. The book will chronicle the New York Mets from the infamous Scott Kazmir trade through the conclusion of the 2010 regular season. I will have detailed analysis including interviews with former players, prominent journalists and fans, and a dose of SABR that I love to infuse into my work. The book will be released on January 1st, 2014 and will be available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other online distributors for $2.99. A paperback version of the book will be available for $8.99. It’s the first of many books that I intend on writing. I’ll track my progress on Around Citi, answer any questions, and have special features and giveaways in the coming months. I’ll be revealing the cover on November 15th, and will be giving away coupon codes for free books and/or special prices. I appreciate the viewership, apologize to those who have had to tolerate me through this process, and will be writing on a more frequent basis shortly. Josh
