19-year-old shortstop Gavin Cecchini‘s 16 game hit streak came to an end last night after he went 0-3 in game one of a double header against the Staten Island Yankees. Cecchini was one game shy of tying the Cyclone team record set by Lucas Duda in 2007. The Mets top pick in the 2012 First Year Player Draft, Cecchini is hitting .302 this season with 10 RBI’s and 2 stolen bases in 151 plate appearances. Out of all Cyclone players Cecchini’s average ranks second closely behind second baseman L.J. Mazzilli, son of former Mets outfielder Lee Mazzilli, who has hit .303 in his 241 plate appearances this season. The two make up a majority of the critical middle part of the Cyclones lineup. Cecchini’s streak is so impressive because of his age. At only 19 years old, he is the second youngest player on the Cyclones’ roster, with catcher Thomas Niddo the only player born at a later date.
