Yoenis Cespedes, already dealing with learning a new league, a new country and a new language, now will be learning how to swing the bat differently.

The Oakland A's have asked the rookie outfielder to stop holding the bat with the knob in the palm of his hand, which has been his grip his entire life, Cespedes told the San Francisco Chronicle this week.

"Sometimes when you start with a new style, it might be hard," he told the newspaper, with coach Ariel Prieto translating.

Manager Bob Melvin told the Chronicle that the training staff would like Cespedes not to hold the knob in his palm because there is concern it could lead to hamate-bone injuries, such as those Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has incurred last season and this. Sandoval also holds the bat with the knob in his palm.

Cespedes will order new bats, with more tapered ends, to try to eliminate the problem without changing how he holds the bat too dramatically.

Hitting coach Chili Davis told the Chronicle that the changes might be uncomfortable for Cespedes initially but that he would be able to adjust.

Before Oakland's 6-3 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday, Cespedes took 28 swings of live batting practice in the cage, and he will take full batting practice Saturday. He is likely to begin a rehab assignment Monday, and if all goes well, he could join the A's later on their road trip next week.
