The NL West boasts some of the best arms in the game with Clayton Kershaw, Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Jhoulys Chacin. Wait, Jhoulys Chacin? The Colorado Rockies' hard-throwing righty who has 20 career wins, one fewer than Kershaw had in his Cy Young Award-winning season a year ago? Yep, that one. Don't chuckle, because Chacin could very well be the next big thing in a division that's already loaded with elite pitchers. The ace in the making has even more electric stuff this year, and it will be on display in Colorado's home opener Monday against the San Francisco Giants.

Jim Tracy in mid-season form as Colorado Rockies drop series in Houston

It didn't take Jim Tracy long. Many of the Colorado Rockies fans were ready to turn the page from a failed 2011 season. Many were ready to give Tracy another chance to prove that he is a good manager. Many were ready to chalk up his losing ways to him managing a group of players who would rather have been doing something else instead of being at the ballpark. Many were ready for...

Rocky debut for Colorado's Jamie Moyer

Jamie Moyer made baseball history, pitching his way into the Colorado Rockies rotation and becoming the oldest starting pitcher to make an Opening Day roster. The 49-year-old left-hander is not impressed. He did not spend the past 22 months rehabbing from Tommy John surgery to become a trivia answer. His intent is to be a contributing member of a big-league rotation and help the...

Jamie Moyer looks his age in loss, Nicasio takes hill for Colorado Rockies on Sunday

Jamie Moyer gave up four runs in five innings.Let the doubting commence. Is he too old?  Are the Colorado Rockies too cheap? How can they run out a team that features a 49-year old? Those are all questions that the pessimists will begin with as the debate their fellow Rockies fans on Sunday. They will say that this crazy experiment is a headline grabber on the Rockies part, and a...

A Small And Painful Point About Jamie Moyer and the Rockies

This doesn't give me any real joy to write, of course. It's basically the baseball equivalent of arguing for the euthanasia of a beloved pet.But if a 49-year-old guy is your #2 starter, and he's a marginal at best candidate to keep the job for any real length of time between his own effectiveness and health concerns...Well, that's not really a great thing to say about...

Woman hit by ball suffers concussion

A woman celebrating her 69th birthday at the Colorado Rockies' home opener Monday sustained a concussion when she was struck in the head by a foul ball off the bat of Michael Cuddyer in the fourth inning. Judith Reese was treated at Denver health and released. ''I want to thank the fans, the paramedics and the community for their instant support,'' Reese said...

Giants-Rockies halted as med staff attends to fan

The game between San Francisco and Colorado was briefly delayed in the top of the fifth inning Monday while medical personnel attended to a fan who was eventually carted off through the left-field tunnel. It was unclear whether the fan was struck by a foul ball off the bat of Michael Cuddyer in the bottom of the fourth or had another medical issue. The Rockies declined to provide...

Rockies' Moyer, 49, to make pitch for history vs. Astros

Although Jamie Moyer has convinced manager Jim Tracy and the Colorado Rockies that he has more in the tank, it will be the Houston Astros who will ultimately make that call on Saturday. At 49 years and 141 days old, Moyer will attempt to become the oldest pitcher to win a major-league game when he faces the Astros at Minute Maid Park. After missing the 2011 campaign following...

Repeat After Me "Giambi Wasn't a Bust"

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Jason Giambi has not been a New York Yankee since 2008 & ever since his last appearance; the masses have only been saying one thing about him.  Bust.  That could not be further from the truth.  Did he live up to the contract that was awarded...

It doesn't get any easier

After opening up the season against Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, today the Pirates head out to LA to face Clayton Kershaw in the Dodgers' home opener. Kershaw is easily one of the best pitchers the Pirates will see this year and he's pretty much in a class with only Halladay and Justin Verlander in terms of every single pitcher the Pirates will face this year. The one saving...

Pirates-Dodgers Preview

When Clayton Kershaw delivers his first pitch to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday afternoon, it'll be 50 years to the day since Dodger Stadium opened its doors. To the fans coming through those gates - and the players taking the field - there's a bit more optimism than usual within one of the majors' iconic franchises. A new ownership group featuring Magic Johnson...
