Everyone has seen Ryan Howard.
He is wearing, again, a protective boot.
There is little doubt that the big man will be back, if not fully healed this year, he will likely playAnd do what he does: for Ryan, it is hitting home runs and driving in runs.
The same can’t be said for Chase Utley.
I wrote his farewell as a full time player already last season.
In close circle, however, we might be looking at the end of his career.
Utley is proud. Proud of the way he plays, all out, best base runner on the team, jumping up for line drives.
But whatever hushed talk has been about Utley, it is not in terms of further surgery, it is of him coming back, as healthy as he can be given his present physical condition.
Could he be ready for Opening Day?
I think so.
He should be playing minor league games starting Sunday.
I remember two, maybe three years ago, being at a game with my wife.
It wasn’t even July, it was mid to late June and Utley already had 63 RBI.
He was hitting around .318.
He was on ...

Chase Utley is so private about his injuries that players on other teams ask reporters for updates on the five-time All-Star.
Good luck with that.
Utley still hasn't played in a game for the Philadelphia Phillies this spring because of a chronic knee condition that forced him to miss the first 46 games last year. He's not participating in team fielding drills or taking...
The Phillies released Dontrelle Willis on Friday. The Phillies released Dontrelle Willis Friday morning, per the team’s official Twitter account.Willis, who allowed five runs in 2.2 innings this Spring against a handful of batters he should never face — righties — was on a non-guaranteed deal. While it was a good idea by Ruben Amaro to try to convert a deceptive pitcher on the...
CLEARWATER, Fla. — Chase Utley is a hard man to find at Bright House Field. He has not played a single inning in a single Grapefruit League game, with Opening Day just three weeks away. He has not fielded a ground ball during batting practice or participated in fielding drills in weeks. He plays catch and takes BP, but seems to spend the rest of his time in the trainer’s room...
This week on Phillies Nation TV, Pat and I dived into possible trades for Joe Blanton. The Blue Jays interest seems to have cooled but we look at whether or not moving Blanton makes sense to begin with.We also examined Dontrelle Willis’ odds of making the team and why Charlie Manuel might be to blame for his early struggles.Later in the show we talked teams to fear in the National...
Here's an oldie, but a goodie from back in 2009. Happy St. Patty's Day.Stuff:*Adios D-Train, we hardly knew ye.*Ryan Howard is still hurt.*Chase Utley still hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game.*There is no pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Lying little red-headed midgets!
Author: Andrew SwansonThe Cliff Lee free agent sweepstakes ended with an unlikely winner, as the venerable southpaw shocked general managers and media pundits alike by signing with the Philadelphia Phillies. It was assumed by most that Lee would take his services to the Yankees as they most certainly had the deepest pockets, yet in the end, Lee chose lifestyle and a comfortable...
There are TWO games today. Most of the starters are staying home to play the Braves featuring a start by Joe Blanton and an appearance by Dontrelle Willis. David Hale speculates that this could be Willis’ last appearance in red pinstripes if the outing does not go well. Willis has been plagued by arm fatigue and soreness and part of his contract becomes guaranteed on Saturday....
Chase Utley rarely speaks to the media, but he did stop by to answer a few questions. His answers, not surprisingly, were short.
Q: How are you feeling? A: "I have nothing new to update you on."
Q: Will you be able to get on the field next week? A: "I’d like to be."
Q: Do you believe that’s realistic? A: "We will see. We’ll see how I feel. We’re...
The Phils announced that they have released Dontrelle Willis, after making three pitching appearances, although doing rather well after his last appearance.
Before his release, Willis, who the Phils had hope to make their left-handed specialist out of the bullpen, pitched in three and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs.
Good luck, Dontrelle. Hope you’ll be able to land with...
Phillies' right handed pitcher Joe Blanton is set to be a free agent at the end of the season. But he may not be in the Phillies plans for the 2012 season which is just weeks away. Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com said that the Red Sox and Orioles sent scouts to check on Blanton yesterday, when he made his third start of the spring.
Both teams are looking to add a veteran arm says...
The Philadelphia Phillies released lefthander Dontrelle Willis on Friday.
Willis, signed to a one-year contract in December, was trying to make the team as a situational reliever but logged a 16.87 ERA in three appearances.
The 30-year-old Willis endured a rocky season in 2011, logging a 1-6 record and 5.00 ERA in 13 starts with the Cincinnati Reds.
A 14-game winner as a rookie...
Spring training invitees Juan Pierre and Joel Pineiro helped their cases for making the Phillies, with solid starts for a Philadelphia split squad in a 6-6 tie with the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.
Pierre, a speedy outfielder, had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice - all in the first two innings for the Phillies. Pineiro started for Philadelphia, allowing a run on two hits and...

It seems we, as Phillies fans have spent the last few seasons being optimistic about how the Phillies will fare. And for good reason most of the time. After the Phillies won the World Series in 2008 and went back to it in 2009, it seems like the Phillies have only gotten better.
The results, however, have indicated otherwise.
The 2012 season may be a little different for the Phillies...
