Peavy awaits to see if or where he will be traded by the July 31 trade deadline.
There are only three days until the trade deadline and the Chicago White Sox have yet to deal anyone besides Matt Thornton. There are massive amounts of rumors surrounding stating pitcher Jake Peavy right now, with rumors of the Atlanta Braves being heavily involved in negotiations as well as the Oakland A’s. However, there are conflicting reports saying the Atlanta Braves are out of negotiations due to the prospects the White Sox desire in return.
According to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com, Peavy was seen with an attendant moving five packed suitcases. It seems highly unlikely that Peavy will be still on the Sox’ active roster after July 31, but there hasn’t been many rumors about any other Sox players, barring Alexei Ramirez who is rumored to be moved with Peavy to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jesse Crain, once a trade asset before the All-Star break, can’t come off the disabled list due to his injured shoulder continuing to bother him. Crain still may be dealt during the waiver period following the trade deadline, but Crain wasn’t going to bring much back to the White Sox anyhow.
What the White Sox really need is hitting. In the most recent Kansas City Royals series the Sox managed to score a meager three runs. Of course the Sox were swept in the series, leaving many questions about how long it will take an offense such as the Sox’ to be rebuilt into respectability.
Jake Peavy may be the key to acquiring more batting talent, yet the Sox are reportedly asking for the moon in the package they desire in return, as well as whichever team acquires the veteran to pay most, if not all, of his contract. It seems that GM Rick Hahn may be just posturing to try to receive as much value as the organization can in return. It seems unlikely that the Oakland A’s would be able to take on much, if any, of Peavy’s nearly $20 million contract remnants.
Just like with many trade rumors, there seems to be a lot of misinformation to either drive down or drive up the interest in Jake Peavy. Good luck trying to make sense of any of it now, but we’ll know for sure by July 31.
