New York Yankees pitcher Cody Eppley was hit right in the head accidentally by a toss from teammate Eric Chavez during Tuesday night's game at Comerica Park against the Detroit Tigers.

It happened after the Yankees recorded the second out of the sixth inning on a groundout by Tigers batter Jhonny Peralta. The Yankees tossed the ball around the infield, and Chavez tossed it back to Eppley. However, Chavez didn't realize until after he made the toss that Eppley wasn't ready for it, and Chavez tried to warn him to look up, but it was too late. As a result, the ball hit Eppley right in the noggin. Doink!

Fortuantely, it was not a hard toss and Eppley was OK. Yankees manager Joe Girardi came out to the mound with a trainer to make sure, and Eppley got a big laugh out of the situation. Rest assured, Eppley will be paying more attention next time the baseball is being tossed around the infield.

Yankees reliever beaned by teammate

Our not top play of the night award goes to Cody Eppley, a relief pitcher of the New York Yankees that was accidently hit in the head on a throw from third baseman Eric Chavez. Eppley was staring at the mound when Chavez threw him a ball after tossing it around the infield. Perhaps the most entertaining part of the video is the YES network analysts laughing during the replay.

Baseball players know that the occasional beaning is all a part of the game.  Except that normally you don’t expect to get nailed in the head by one of your own teammates, which is exactly what happened to Yankees reliever Cody Eppley during the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s game against the Tigers. Eppley wasn’t paying attention to the infielders throwing the ball around...

Chavez is doing a nice A-Rod impersonation

Eric Chavez has filled in admirably for Alex Rodriguez, but the veteran third baseman isn't comparing himself to the three-time American League MVP. Chavez finished the series hitting .563 (9-for-16) with two home runs and five...

What You Need to Know: Friday, August 10 by Daniel Rathman

The Thursday Takeaway The National Basketball Association annually honors its best bench player with the Sixth Man of the Year Award. Major League Baseball doesn’t have an analogous accolade, but if it were to start giving one out this year, the trophy might as well be named after Eric Chavez. Once an elite defensive third baseman with 30-homer power, Chavez’s career...
