PLAYERS: Lucas Duda
TEAMS: New York Mets
Last year the Mets had a nice big celebration for the 50th anniversary of the franchise.  This included not one, but two All-Time Team “lists” being generated.  The first being the 50 Greatest Mets in Team History, and the second was an All-Time Team, selected from various candidates by a panel of Met experts (writers, broadcasters, etc). The last time, and the first time really, this undertaking was done was in 2002, for the 40th anniversary.  And it would be just an All-Time Team, but done through fan balloting, done both online at Mets.com and at Shea Stadium (fans would get rewarded with a special pack of Fleer baseball cards at the unveiling of the team prior to a game later in the season). So, it would be interesting to see how a decade and a different, and some might argue better in terms of comprehending the task given to them, voting base changed feelings about the Mets’ All-Time Squad; Starting with the skipper, the ballots for Manager remained unchanged with Gil Hodges, ...

Jordany Valdespin is fighting his way onto the Mets opening day roster

Jordany Valdespin was far from guaranteed a spot on the New York Mets opening day roster, but with his strong Spring campaign continuing through this past weekend, the 25-year-old may very well be on his way to earning just that.  Yesterday the Mets and St. Louis Cardinals were scoreless until the eighth inning, when Valdespin’s single off Edward Mujica plated Travis d’Arnaud...

David Wright is “Captain America” For Team USA and Should be Captain of the Mets

It’s not often that a Yankee will have much praise for a Met and vice versa.  Then again, it’s pretty rare to see a Yankee managing legend coaching a current Mets superstar. That’s exactly what we are getting with this year’s World Baseball Classic with Joe Torre managing Mets third baseman David Wright for team USA.  Wright’s presence in the American clubhouse has been...

Five reasons Jordany Valdespin should make the roster

The team does not have an elite (or even a good) base stealer (David Wright?  Maybe…) without him.  Jordany Valdespin is a threat to swipe a bag and actually seems to have improved his instincts a little so he’s not 100% ability when running. Fielding is a thing you might want.  Let us pretend that Lucas Duda was hitting (Is this late 2011?) now… are the runs he’d bat...

Niese Still Hasn’t Allowed A Run, Den Dekker Gloves Another, ‘Spin Homers Then Gets Drilled

The Mets had an absolute field-day this afternoon with an 11-0 romp over against the Detroit Tigers in Lakeland, Fla. Jonathon Niese got the start against Detroit and continues to roll, tossing four and two thirds innings of scoreless ball and allowing just one hit while walking four. Niese has yet to allow a run this Spring. It won’t be long until he ‘s officially tapped as...

Valdespin Competing With Nieuwenhuis For Outfield Spot

VALDESPIN: Decked by Verlander (AP) Jordany Valdespin is not an easy person to like, and especially hard to cheer for. Ask a question and he’ll often mumble an indifferent and inaudible answer. He exudes confidence on the field, but crosses the line with a brash attitude, tendency to showboat and not always hustle. Off the field he wears a bright red baseball cap reading “JV...

Video: David Wright’s grand slam for Team USA

Wright has been absolutely smashing the ball over at the World Baseball Classic, and he really has been “the guy” for USA Baseball. Wright has simply shown that he cares more than anyone else on his team about winning for his country, and I think that is great. Although Wright’s teams haven’t really won anything, outside of the 2006 team, Wright is a “winner” and truly...

Niese outpitches Verlander in Mets' win

Jonathon Niese knows he may get the ball on opening day if Johan Santana begins the season on the disabled list. The young left-hander is not taking anything for granted, though. Niese pitched one-hit ball for 4 2-3 innings, and the New York Mets roughed up Justin Verlander in an 11-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Starting the opener at home on April 1 against the...

Jordany Valdespin hit in the groin by Justin Verlander pitch

Apparently, Jordany Valdespin was not wearing a cup when Justin Verlander hit him.  The Detroit Tigers' pitcher lost control of one of his pitches and it sailed inside to Valdespin.  Verlander says he instantly knew where it was going to get Valdespin.  Valdespin had not chance and was hit in the groin. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Valdespin's injury...

The 2013 Season Is Sandy Alderson’s Final Mulligan

That’s how Joel Sherman of the NY Post began his article this morning in which he asserts that this is the last year the Mets general manager gets to explain away a worsening major league product in the name of rebuilding. The patience extended the Alderson regime, in general, is greater than most in his position receive around here. Consider Brian Cashman’s Yankees have made...

Jonathan Niese Sparkles Against Detroit

Jonathan Niese threw 4.2 scoreless innings this afternoon against the Tigers, begging the question: Why not just off call the charade with Johan Santana? It is clear Santana won’t be ready for the start of the season, and the only possible result in rushing him is risk injury. Terry Collins has already said Niese would replace Santana as the Opening Day starter and Jeremy Hefner...

Hope In Flushing, Despair In The Bronx?

It seems you just can’t watch the evening sports reports these days without hearing about how yet another Yankee “great” has landed himself on the disabled list. This week it was Mark Teixeira. The longtime Yankee first baseman will miss eight to ten weeks after an injury suffered while hitting balls off a tee during a workout for the World Baseball Classic. Teixeira will...
