Phillies reliever Jose Contreras has torn a ligament and a tendon in his right elbow and will likely miss the rest of the season. Contreras was injured Friday. An MRI scan Saturday showed he tore his ulnar collateral ligament and flexor pronator tendon. The 40-year-old Contreras had right elbow surgery last year. He reinjured the elbow in the seventh inning Friday night while facing Miami's Omar Infante. After throwing his fifth pitch of the inning - an 89 mph fastball - Contreras grabbed his right arm and staggered to the ground on the grass between first and second before leaving the game. Week In Review – Halladay, Utley, Hamels

We find ourselves at the end of another mediocre week from the Phillies.  The Phillies took two of three from the Mets before giving up two of three to the Marlins.  Lucky for us, mediocre baseball seems the slogan of the National League East so the Phillies are still not that far off.————————–The Good, the bad, the ugly (Wild Thing)Chase Utley is on the move...

Phillies 2B Utley to begin rehab assignment Monday

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, out all season with an injured left knee, will begin a rehabilitation assignment Monday at extended spring training in Clearwater, Fla. The five-time All-Star gave no timetable Sunday for a possible return to the Philadelphia lineup. Utley's career has been sidetracked the last 2 1/2 seasons because of injuries to his hip and knees. He has...

Carlos Ruiz may make All-Star team, but he has big road block in Atlanta

Philadelphians are making a big push to get Carlos Riuiz on the All-Star team this year. And it is worthy. He is hitting a lusty .371 with eight home runs and 31 RBI. But in Atlanta, and rightly so until this year, Brian McCann, Atlanta’s catcher has made the All-Star team. He was the MVP of the All-Star game in 2010, even. So what about this year? This year, according to MLB.com...

Shane Victorino Out of Phillies Lineup As Kyle Kendrick Opens Up Series Against NL East Foe Marlins

I'm feeling lucky today. My high school graduation practice went smoothly, I avoided a car accident on the way home and I won $3 from the lottery. The only thing that blows is that I could be at this game, but I couldn't get off of work. Hopefully most of my luck is with Kyle Kendrick and the Phillies tonight when they host the second place Miami Marlins. The Marlins ...

Anemic Phils get some good news on Utley

The Phillies offense was at its worst on Sunday against Carlos Zambrano and the Miami Marlins. They played their 55th straight game without both Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. Manager Charlie Manuel slotted journeyman Hector Luna into the cleanup spot of his batting order. The team's lone extra base hit was a bunt double by Juan Pierre. It wasn't a surprise, then, that...

He's got...

Phils Drop Game, Series to Marlins in Ugly Fashion

PHOTO: APThe Phillies lost to the Marlins on Sunday 5-1, losing their first series since the Nationals series on May 23. It was an ugly loss all around–there was some poor pitching, some poor fielding, and some really poor hitting. Actually, starter Joe Blanton didn’t pitch too bad, it was just a combination of a few mistakes, some great hitting by the Marlins, some seeing-eye...

Phillies glass still half-full

The rumors of the death of the Philadelphia Phillies are premature. Even with their multitude of injuries and sub-standard play, the returning division champions are still very much alive in the NL East.

In crowded division, Phillies and Marlins meet

The Phillies took two of three games from the Marlins in their first meeting at Citizens Bank Park in April. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso) When you look at the NL East, considering the state of the Phillies this season, you may be surpised at the standings. This is as good a logjam as any. Five teams separated by three games. The Phillies are still in last place. But they are only...
