Alfonso Soriano laced a two-out line-drive two-run double down the LF line and Dioner Navarro followed with a towering two-run HR over the RF bullpens to rally the Cubs to a 4-2 lead in the 6th, and then Jorge Soler slugged a solo home run to the top of the berm over the LF fence and Christian Villanueva drilled two-run HR over the left-center fence to key a five-run 8th, as the Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres 9-3 in Cactus League action this afternoon at Dwight Paterson Field at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, AZ.
LHP Travis Wood contributed with both his arm and his bat, throwing four innings of one-hit shutout ball with six strikeouts (61 pitches - 35 strikes), and roping a line-drive lead-off single and then scoring on the Soriano double to ingite the four-run 6th.

The Cubs unveiled their new marketing slogan the other day and simultaneously churned Twitter into a furious snarky froth with "Committed." Frankly, I think "Committed" is right up there with "It's a Way of Life" as most mockable slogans the Cubs have come up with under the Ricketts. It took Twitter about 10 seconds to start making insanity references...
The days of the Chicago Cubs being lovable losers are gone and now the team is looking for ways to bring fans back to the ballpark. Being one of the few teams that do not employ a mascot their is talk that the Cubs could add one as part of a renovation of their 99 year old ballpark.
Of course not everyone is happy about that.
Pitcher Jeff Samardzija told the Chicago Tribune that...
The Cubs are undergoing rebuilding, including a farm system that has missed on some big prospects over the last few years. Can Theo and Jed make this system an elite one?
Note: Avg ranking takes the average of any site I could find that had team rankings (sum of ranks divided by total sites). Comp ranking is the composite for the organization; it basically is a ranking of the averages...
Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run double and Dioner Navarro followed with two-run homer Sunday, leading the Chicago Cubs past the San Diego Padres 9-3.
Christian Villanueva added a two-run homer for the Cubs. He has three hits this spring and all of them are home runs.

Jeff Samardzija homered and allowed four runs over 4 2-3 innings Monday in the Chicago Cubs' 7-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5.
Samardzija, prepping for an opening-day start at Pittsburgh on April 1, gave up four hits and two walks and struck out two. He hit a solo homer to center in the fifth against Eury De la Rosa that pulled the Cubs to 3-2.
Mitch Mathews brings a rare blend of size and athleticism to BYU’s pass-catching corps, and because he creates a challenge for those covering him, the coaches are going to use him in various ways. Could BYU fans see their very own version of Notre Dame’s Jeff Samardzija beginning to emerge?
I've had a very sore neck, back and shoulders for the last couple of weeks so I haven't written much over that time. It's still not 100% and I'm beginning to feel as though it never will be. But I am good enough that I can spread my infinite wisdom to our readers. You're welcome.
Jeff Samardzija was named the opening day starter. A year ago it was a far fetched...
