PLAYERS: Darwin Barney
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs have placed second baseman Darwin Barney on the disabled list due to the gash on his leg, according to Paul Sullivan of The Chicago Tribune. Gonzalez up as Barney goes on DL. Barney says he stopped feeling so bad for his leg injury when he saw L'ville's Ware's knee injury. — Paul Sullivan (@PWSullivan) April 1, 2013 Barney cut his knee while sliding in foul territory attempting to chase down a fly ball during a spring training contest. It required stitches, but the Cubs only initially ruled him out for Opening Day. However, Barney’s injury is significant enough that it will require at least two weeks on the DL. While he’s out, the Cubs are expected to use Brent Lillibridge at second base. Barney hit .254/.299/.354 with 26 doubles, four triples and seven home runs with six stolen bases in seven attempts last season. While his offensive totals weren’t extremely impressive, Barney’s defense earned him a Gold Glove Award. Cubs Draft Pool for 2013 MLB Draft

The Chicago Cubs get to pick second this June in the MLB Rule 4 Draft as part of their “reward” for sucking so much last season.  Unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess) they were unable to suck as much as the Astros so they might lose out on the overall best player available, unless the Astros decide to implement their Carlos Correa plan again.  Not that Correa was a terrible...

Opening Day postgame thread – Cubs 3, Pirates 1

Cubs win! The Cubs took an early lead on a first inning home run by Anthony Rizzo that still hasn't landed. Combine that with eight strong innings by Jeff Samardzija (two hits, one walk, 9 strikeouts) and it's a recipe for a Cubs win. Carlos Marmol made the end of the game interesting by doing Carlos Marmol things at the beginning of the ninth, but Sveum rightly pulled him...

Cubs Opening Day 2013

Bless Their Hearts, The Chicago Cubs Are Somewhat Optimistic About This Year

At 61-101, the Chicago Cubs amazingly weren’t the worst team in Major League Baseball last season. That honor went to the 55-107 Houston Astros, but since they are already on pace to finish this season 162-0, the With Leather Worst Team Watch is focused solely on the Cubbies for the time being. Wait, that’s not fair. Let’s throw the Miami Marlins, Colorado Rockies and Minnesota...

No Prize for Second Place

Off days suck. The traditional day off after game number one by MLB schedule makers is always one of the toughest to make it through, but fate made it an especially difficult task for Cubs fans as two nearly Cubs from a year ago showed why the front office had interest in them. Yoenis Cespedes hit a long, hard line drive homerun to dead center in Oakland last night. Cespedes has...

Game 1: Cubs 3 Pirates 1

The easiest and probably most accurate way to describe the Pirates' 3-1 loss to the Cubs on Opening Day at PNC Park is probably this: it was cold out and when it's cold out, hard-throwing pitchers seem to do well, and as a result AJ Burnett and Jeff Samardzija combined for 19 strikeouts between them in just 13 2/3 innings combined work.  Burnett was particularly awesome...

Burnett struck out ten batters in his first career Opening Day start, but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs scored two runs in the first inning on an Anthony Rizzo home run and led the rest of the way. Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija gave up just two...
