The Chicago Cubs released veteran lefthander Doug Davis on Wednesday. Davis was pounded for 10 runs in 4 1/3 innings against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. He was signed to a minor league deal in April but had a rocky tenure with the Cubs, going 1-7 with a 6.50 ERA in nine starts. The 35-year-old Davis is 92-108 in 306 appearances (286 starts) in parts of 13 seasons with five different teams. To take his spot on the roster, the Cubs activated rookie second baseman Darwin Barney off the 15-day disabled list. Barney was batting .294 with one home run and 25 RBIs prior to going on the DL with a sprained left knee.
