PHOENIX (AP) -- Jesus Guzman homered and Clayton Richard was effective enough as the San Diego Padres held on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Thursday. Richard (14-12) allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings to raise his career record against Arizona to 6-0 -- including three wins in three starts at Chase Field over the past 10 weeks. Anthony Bass, the last of five Padres pitchers in the ninth, struck out Aaron Hill on a checked swing for his first career save. Adam Eaton hit his first career home run, Hill also homered and Justin Upton was a home run short of the cycle for the Diamondbacks. Arizona fell 5 12 games behind St. Louis in the NL wild-card race. Diamondbacks starter Tyler Skaggs (1-3) pitched in and out of trouble and allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings.

Padres Could Contend In 2013

When the San Diego Padres extended both Huston Street and Carlos Quentin this summer, they effectively signaled an intent to contend in the NL West in the near future. The organization felt that future was imminent enough to forego acquiring additional young talent via the trade market and instead committed valuable resources to injury-prone (though productive) assets who play non...

Cashner shut down by Padres; Quentin comes out again

The San Diego Padres shut down right-hander Andrew Cashner for the rest of the season Wednesday. Can left fielder Carlos Quentin be far behind? Cashner won't pitch again in 2012 because of a strained tendon behind his right armpit. Cashner's velocity on his fastball was off by five to eight miles per hours in his two starts since returning from the disabled list on...

Padres Shut Down Andrew Cashner for Season

The San Diego Padres have decided to shut down right-hander Andrew Cashner for the remainder of the season as he continues to deal with a strained right lat muscle, reports Corey Brock of MLB.com: Cashner, who has missed 51 games this season with a strained right lat, indicated on Wednesday that he is still having pain in the tendon under his right armpit.  "...

D-backs look to finish sweep of Padres

Reaching the postseason is largely out of their control, but the Arizona Diamondbacks have a good chance to move above .500 for the first time in nearly a month with a sweep of their pesky division rival. The Diamondbacks will go for their fourth straight win Thursday night and hand the Padres' Clayton Richard his first loss against them. Arizona has won eight of 12, but is...

Daily Friar 9.20.12

The Padres are just about done for the season. They are now officially eliminated from the division race, and are 8 games back in the Wild Card standings. So while the playoffs were a longshot at the beginning of the moth, they are pretty much out of reach now. If they had kept winning and taken the first two games in Arizona instead of losing them horribly then we might have still...

Daily Friar 9.21.12

What a way to finish off the series against the D-Backs. After the two deflating defeats the previous nights, the Padres really needed a strong finish to get back to their winning ways. Yesterday’s game was just the spark they needed, especially for the bullpen. Bases loaded with nobody out usually will spell at least one run for any team. However, the Padre were able to squash...

Daily Friar 9.19.12

After a little vacation I am back to writing the Daily Friar for you all. I guess while I was away we had some technical issues and the Padres took another series from the Rockies over the weekend. I would have posted yesterday, but I have been dealing with some personal issues after this weekend, not to mention the Padres had an off day. So now that they are playing again I am...

Friars Avert Sweep, Narrowly Escaping In Wednesday's Win.

San Diego came into Chase Field with a seven game winning streak in the Diamond backs home field. After winning five straight series and seven of their last eight, the Padres lost the three-game contest to Arizona by dropping their first two games to the Diamondbacks. The Padres bats failed to score more than two runs in each of the first two games before they scored three in the...
