Busy day for news today as a lot of great stories have popped up from around the web. Two, yes I said two, articles have come from Corey Brock on Padres.com explaining some stuff that is happening this week. Also the team is finally going to try and do something about the issue with Time Warner (about time). There is also news on the pitching side of things with the team. According to Corey Brock on his twitter account (click here for the link), the Padres are not going after and were never going after Shaun Marcum or Joe Saunders. In my opinion, Corey Brock has been the buzzkill of the Padres offseason. A rumor pops up that might give us fans some hope and he comes in and shoots it down right away. Anyway, like I said a lot to get to so let’s get to it: Padres seek first All-Star Game at Petco Park – Padres.com “Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler said on Tuesday that the team is preparing a presentation for Major League Baseball, as per the request of the Commissioner’s office, t...

Padres Avoid Arbitration With Will Venable

According to The Union Tribune (via twitter), the Padres have avoided arbitration with Will Venable agreeing to $2.675 million for 2013. Venable is coming off a 2012 where in 417 at bats he posted a .264/.335/.429 slash line while hitting 9 home runs and driving in 45 RBIs. These numbers have been on par with what he has been capable of for most of his career so far. Will split time...

It’s About Time: The All-Star Game at Petco

The Padres are asking to host an All-Star Game. As a Padre fan I’d like to say: what the heck too so long?  And don’t tell me that we got the World Baseball Classic instead, that is not a fair trade. I can’t say I remember the 1978 Mid-Summer Classic (I was busy being born that month).  I do remember the buzz created by the game in 1992.  The team was pretty good that year...

Daily Friar 1.15.13

Here we are with another quiet day on the Padres side of things. The biggest news in San Diego right now is that Mike McCoy is going to be the new head coach for the Chargers. This is coming a matter of weeks after the season ended for the Chargers. What have the Padres done in the matter of months after the season ended? Yeah that’s what I thought. My frustration isn’t coming...

Three for the Show: Catchers

This is the first in a 10-part series where I will identify the top three players at each position in the Padres’ minor league system. Up first: Catchers. The depth chart at catcher is certainly an area that presents an opportunity for improvement. The gap between the haves and the have nots for this position is fairly substantial. There are two to three guys who have the potential...

Daily Friar 1.17.13

Busy day around MLB today as the World Baseball Classic rosters are being announced. Also there were a lot of moves made yesterday that need to be reported. It’s arbitration time, so news will be coming in probably every hour of someone getting a pay raise somewhere. Last night Will Venable got his, which leaves the Padres with seven more players to get done before the deadline...
