Daily Friar 12.10.12

It is known that the Padres are looking for starting pitching depth. Preferably they are looking for someone that can come cheap, or someone that they can get via trade that won’t take a lot to get. I understand the Padres philosophy of waiting for the right piece, but if they wait any longer there won’t be a right piece left. I for one am tired of minor league signings in hopes of them making the major league squad. The Padres are stuck in the small ball ideal that they have to catch lightning in a bottle for something to work. This makes sense when they have been linked to guys like Dice-K, or last season with Ross Ohlendorf, Jason Marquis, Jeff Suppan and Eric Stults. I bring this up because we all know about the Greinke signing for the Dodgers. Well now they have also signed Korean left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu. Also the Royals have acquired James Shields and Wade Davis from the Ray, it took the top prospect in baseball to do it, but they got it done. I’m saying that it is time for the Padres to dangle some of their prospects out there to get a return, instead of trading away their proven talent for more prospects. I know a lot of people don’t like dealing with the enemy, but I think we should start talking to the Dodgers. They have 8 starting pitchers for 5 spots. We should be able to pull at least one away from them.
