Found March 24, 2013 on Friarhood:
Hope you all are enjoying March Madness (if you are watching and into it). For those that are just sitting idly by and waiting for baseball’s regular season to start, you are in luck! This is the final week of spring training as we are eight days away from April 1st! The 25 man roster is slowly starting to take shape as we find out who will start at what position, who will crack the rotation, who will wind up in the bullpen, who will wind up on the disabled list, who will be sent back to the minors, and who will ultimately be released? The Padres released a handful of minor league players yesterday (which will be noted below), and they also just announced that Freddy Garcia has been released as well. No shocker here though as he had an abysmal spring and pitched terribly again in his start yesterday. In other minor league news, Nate Freiman, who used to be Padres property, is now with the Oakland A’s. He was picked up by the Astros via the Rule V draft, but was claimed off waivers b...

Padres release veteran right-hander Garcia

The Padres released veteran right-handed pitcher Freddy Garcia on Sunday morning, eliminating one candidate for the No. 5 spot in their starting rotation. Garcia, who signed a minor-league contract with the Padres this offseason, had a difficult spring. He was 1-4 with an 8.71 ERA in six starts, allowing 25 runs and 26 hits in 20 2-3 innings. If he had been added to the 40-man roster...

Padres Name Opening Day Starter

Clayton Richard The Padres have announced via twitter that Edinson Volquez will start opening day versus the New York Mets at Citi Field.  Volquez, acquired last season along with Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal, and Brad Boxberger in exchange for Mat Latos pitched well in spurts, but couldn’t seem to avoid free passes, walking a league leading 105 hitters. Volquez has a record...

Padres Austin Hedges Is Cerebral And Skilled

Austin Hedges is considered the third-best catching prospect in baseball behind the Mariners’ Mike Zunino and the Mets’ Travis D’Arnaud. Regarded as a fantastic defender, he surprised with the bat as a 19-year old in the Midwest League last season. With offensive numbers 19 percent above league average, Hedges effectively shed the draft label of defensive specialist. The top...

Daily Friar 3.25.13

Good news as we head into the final week of spring training is that Yonder Alonso is showing his power stroke. He hit another home run in yesterday’s game as the Padres beat the Brewers. This now makes five home runs for him in the past nine games he has played in. Hopefully that will carry over into the start of the season, especially when the Padres head to Colorado after the...

Daily Friar 3.23.13

The Padres were back in action last night under the Peoria lights against the Mariners. Tyson Ross had another outstanding game as he looks to take over the number five spot in the rotation. Coming into last night’s game he was riding an 11 1/3 scoreless inning streak. That streak came to end in the fifth inning via a Kelly Shoppach home run. It proved to be the only run that Ross...

Yonder Alonso hit his fifth home run in his last nine games, helping the San Diego Padres defeat a Milwaukee Brewers' split squad 6-4 Sunday. Alonso was 2 for 4 and drove in three runs, raising his spring training total to 12 RBIs to go along with a .236 average (13 for 55). Brewers starter Wily Peralta allowed six runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings. San Diego's Eric Stults...

Minor League Camp Report: March 23

Padres vs. Royals - AA/AAA games LHP Clayton Richard and RHP Luke Gregerson both got innings at the beginning of the two games today. Gregerson looked a little better than Richards but its foolish to see much into performances of established major league pitchers on the back fields of a minor league complex.
