Well that was an ugly game to watch yesterday (Steve Adler thinks so too as you will see in the links below). There are so many questions I have about it all though that leave me scratching my head. The most glaring one has to be Edinson Volquez. He pitched for his country in the World Baseball Classic and was phenomenal for them. That was the equivalent of the world series for him he said, so you would think he would be more nervous with more pressure and thus pitch worse. Yet here he was yesterday in game one of the season losing control of every pitch he was throwing. Volquez didn’t even make it out of the fourth inning before Bud Black decided to go to the bullpen. To have to use all those arms in the bullpen this early in the season spells trouble. One more big question is the decision making of Bud Black. Yes Volquez pitched well in the WBC, but he didn’t put up great numbers in spring. Also he pitched Opening Day last year against the Dodgers and wasn’t very good then too. La...

MadFriars' Preview: 2013 Tucson Padres

Synopsis: This is a classic Triple-A team with some prospects, others that are blocked and some guys trying to work their way back. The thin desert air and near cement infield at Kino Stadium in the summer months make this very much a hitter's paradise but not as much as some of the other stadiums in the PCL South. Three Strikes with Randy Smith, the Padres Director of Player...

Padres Showcase Five First Rounders In Arizona

With the closest Padres affiliate nearly 10 hours away from the Atlanta area, spring training is my only opportunity to scout Padres prospects. Last week, Dave Laurila and I tag teamed a piece on top catching prospect Austin Hedges. And while he was the most impressive position prospect in the organization, a pair of right handers ruled the day. In the Single-A game, Joe Ross struggled...

Mixed-league roto owners, looking for a waiver-wire pitcher before Wednesday's full slate of games? Here's my free-agent choice (citing most 12-team leagues) for one day of fantasy stardom: Clayton Richard, Padres (@ Mets) 1. From a splits perspective last year, Richard posted two months of 20-plus strikeouts and two months of a sub-2.50 ERA. 2. Richard (14-14, 3.99...
