The website is back up finally. Let's fill you in as to what has happened while the site has been down. The owners have voted and Ron Fowler and the O'Malleys are officially the new owners of the Padres. In the mean time Padres pitchers have forgotten how to get guys out and have not been lasting long, which of course is taxing the bullpen. The team that we have seen of late has decided to revert back to it's early season days of losing and losing big. Last night was no exception to this as you will see in the articles below. So let's get back to business and get back to the Daily Friar. Here are your Padres links for today:

Ohlendorf has rough night in loss to Giants - Padres.com
"But that third inning was very real, very long and very productive -- at least for the Giants, who tallied eight runs on eight hits, two walks and an error in an inning that doomed the Padres in a 10-1 loss at Petco Park on Friday night."

Stauffer likely done for 2012, Padres future uncertain - Union Tribune
"Stauffer, who has made only one major league start this season due to a strained flexor tendon in his right elbow, developed discomfort in his right shoulder while on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson."

Grandal returns early from pesky injury - NCT
"Grandal, however, missed just 16 games before Padres manager Bud Black penciled his name into the lineup Friday as his starting catcher and No. 5 hitter."

News on the corresponding move that brought Grandal back - CBS Sports
"The Padres have placed catcher Nick Hundley on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee injury and reactivated catcher Yasmani Grandal, the club announced Friday."

MLB to test new replay techniques this week - Yahoo.com
"MLB will analyze a radar-based system and a camera-based system, both similar to the one used in tennis for down-the-line fair-or-foul calls. Yankee Stadium and Citi Field will be the guinea-pig parks for the systems, which have been installed recently."

As we saw last night, Matt Cain is the Padres killer this time - Chicken Friars
"Sure, Cain has 11 loses against the Padres but most of those loses can be blamed for a lack of run support. No fault of his own, if I were the Padres the way to beat Cain is by holding the Giants’ offense in check."

Gaslamp Ball has a response to Jay Jaffe's oh so insightful article
"Sports Illustrated's Jay Jaffe offers some advice for the new Padres owners. My responses to his advice are below."

Avenging Jack Murphy has a new installment of Cuckoo for Nick Canepa
"I tried to figure out what Nick said. I offered an idea. And then I debunked myself and quite possibly Nick. I'm pretty sure it's what Nick Canepa meant and all I can think is: He sure displays an amazing commitment to a false narrative."

Padres activate Grandal, put Hundley on 15-day DL

The San Diego Padres have activated rookie Yasmani Grandal and placed fellow catcher Nick Hundley on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right knee. The team announced the moves before Friday night's game against San Francisco. Grandal had been on the DL since July 31 with a strained muscle on his right side. He played two games with Class-A Lake Elsinore on a rehab assignment...

Padres option Ohlendorf to minors

The San Diego Padres have optioned pitcher Ross Ohlendorf to Triple-A Tucson. Ohlendorf allowed a career-high eight runs and six hits in 2 1-3 innings Friday night during the San Francisco Giants' 10-1 win. He gave up seven runs over three innings in his previous start, an 11-5 loss at Pittsburgh. Ohlendorf is 4-4 with a 7.58 ERA in 13 appearances, including nine starts. The...

Padres RHP Stauffer could miss rest of year

San Diego Padres right-hander Tim Stauffer, on the disabled list for a strained right elbow, could miss the remainder of the season. Stauffer, who was on the DL a second time because of the elbow, felt soreness in his right shoulder after an Aug. 11 rehab start for Class AAA Tucson. Padres manager Bud Black told the North County Times that the new injury could cause Stauffer...

Prime Nine: San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres arguably have the best farm system in the game of baseball. I say arguably because these things always can be argued. For one, very few people agree on top ten lists among positions, but even if there were agreement, you have to weigh the lists pretty heavily. There can be quite a difference between the fifth rated player at a position and the top...

Sale of Padres approved by MLB owners

The sale of the San Diego Padres was officially approved Thursday morning during Major League Baseball's quarterly owners meetings in Denver. The sale was the first order of business and was quickly approved. Ten minutes into the meeting, John Moores, who had owned the Padres since 1994, departed and the new group, led by four heirs of the O'Malley baseball dynasty and...

Big Sunday Win By Padres Foils San Francisco Sweep.

The Padres snapped a five game losing streak with a big 7-1 win to avoid being swept by the visiting Giants. The Giants destroyed the Friars in the opener on Friday 10-1 thanks to an eight run third, the most given up by the Padres in Petco Park history. The Padres lost the series on Saturday night when there ninth inning comeback fell just short when former San Diego right hander...

Padres 7, Giants 1

Clayton Richard pitched eight sparkling innings, Cameron Maybin drove in three runs and the San Diego Padres snapped a five-game losing streak with a 7-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. The Giants dropped out of first in the NL West and trail the Dodgers by a half-game heading into their big three-game series in Los Angeles. Madison Bumgarner is scheduled to face Dodgers...

Fan snags foul ball, holds onto snow cone

We’ve seen great foul ball catches involving fans holding babies, so that part is not new. But add a snowcone to that mix, now you have something special. This San Diego Padres fan didn’t catch the ball in the air, as it more or less rolled to him, but this dude can really multi-task. Sidenote: What is up with that woman in the white blouse? She looks kind of hot, but she...

Layne Strikes Out Three in Debut

From the CPL Former Martinsville Mustangs starter Tom Layne made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres on August 14. The 6-3, 185-pound lefty from Mount Olive went one inning in relief and struck out the side in the Padres 6-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Layne, who was promoted earlier that day from Double-A San Antonio showed no signs of being nervous as two of...

Obviously, we won the series with the Padres!

Hit #2700 on his bobblehead night Listening to "Gold on the Ceiling" on this lovely Friday, thought y'all might like to see some pictures from this week's Padres series. I'm so sad I don't have any pictures of my own to share - over the last few seasons I've tried to make it to at least one game per home series, and this is the first I've missed...

Daily Friar 8.19.12

Much like San Francisco Giants fans the team would just not go away last night. Every time the Padres grabbed a lead or tied the game, the Giants just came back like it was nobody's business. It was as if they were toying with us and seeing how much fight we had in us. In the end the Giants came out on top 8-7 to hand the Padres their fifth loss in a row. I'm not sure who...
